Hey guys I am about to graduate from SP to MP. I play emperor and immortal on SP and do fairly well so I should be able to do MP well. I've played a couple games on MP and noticed a few things:

1. People quit all the time which sucks
2. I don't really notice any (clan or individual) ladders or clans.

Obviously if theres a ladders that would solve the proble of people quitting. Is there any site that offers a respectable ladder that is fairly popular? And is it just individual or does it support clans also?

I kind of browsed around a few pages of this forum didn't see it (my first time in the MP forum here).

The Civ4Players Ladder can be found at http://www.myleague.com/civ4players/ ... there are a lot of great players there, and there is almost always at least a new ladder game or two being hosted at most times in the lobby (in addition to those already in progress). There are a number of active clans on the Civ4 ladder, and many others who are still playing Civ3.

man, immortal is nothing!i only play noble on sp,but i can beat a friend of mine who have got several conquest victories in deity games, quite easily .
once u r used to the the asymmetry setting between u and AI,u may feel
loseing the rhythm of development and expansion, cant find a balance point between ecnomics and military aggression.
last word, get ready for your first experience of being slaughtered in the MP
enjoy

A group of friends and I play every week for fun. We use teamspeak to talk to each other and just have a fun time. Check out the Civ4 forums at our website at www.mazx.org

The only problem is that ladder games tend to be played by some strange rules and one need to allocate about 6 hours and patience for it.

6 hours is short for a open game, and ladder games don't have players quit on the first attack :P Yes we have rules, which are all designed to make a fair playing field, and see games threw to completion.

CS

My point is, game setting typically used on ladder tend to be inheritantly unfair and very different from standart game.
I am not talking about rules directed to finish the game.

What are you talking about then? I have played over 200 ladder games and I don't know what you mean by "inherently unfair" rules. About 1/3 of ladder games are always war, no tech trading. The other 2/3 are some form of team game, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, 5v5, etc.

Few ladder games last 6 hours, as the maximum turn limit is usually 120. Most team games have settled on 90 or 100 turns and most free for all games are 120 .

As for clans...if you're an utter git, then come join us at clan Abomination:

I'm ..A..DeviousDevil there and having a good time with them.

6 hours? I'm playing almost teamers only and don't remember such teamers. Ctons are faster than that as well from my limited experience.

Different? Yes. But multiplayer is not singleplayer so settings are different as well to provide a good playing experience. Players do play what they want so these settings are there because they're popular and they're just better for players.

And if you think they're unfair then maybe you just don't understand something :) Inherently unfair multiplayer games can't be popular.

Well, anyway i don't see any reason to discuss some abstract statements. Tell exactly what you have in mind and then it will be worth discussing.

6 hours? Maybe if GameSpy is acting up, but you can usually expect to finish a game in 2-3 hours.

Strange rules? Most games are played under different settings than SP to eliminate double teaming and cheating, making it an every man for himself type of game. Here are some typical rules --

Always War
No Tech Trading
No Barbarians
120 Turns (so that the game actually ends after a few hours)
2 City Elimination
Blazing Turn Timer (depending on era)
No discussing or private messaging game info (such as who has metal, where a city is, etc.)

This actually makes for some very fun games. Plus the players on the ladder, by rule cannot quit (or they concede and automatically lose), the games actually play to the end (because of the turn limit), and ladder players generally have their firewalls and routers configured properly so there are actually less connection difficulties than in open games.

If you enjoy playing the game through the later stages, just host or hop into a later era game -- while a lot of these games are played in Ancient starts, everyday you will see games in all starting eras as well.
