Yes, laptop indeed. I'm going on a trip up north in a few weeks and its going to SUCK! That's why I needed to bring CIv along with me!

However, I own a Mac, while our Laptop is a PC! So what did this clever Hippo do? He bought another copy of civ 2! No no no. Hold your applause.

And it REALLY hurts!

There is no number pad, so I need to use the mouse to move my units on an angle. And the lighting is horrid! Has anyone else every shared my pain? If so, your experiences are sought immdiately!

Thats too bad.You should of done what i did and just bought a new game. I mean what 30 bucks compared to the sheer joy of bring able to play civ.

I'm pretty sure there is a utlity available to superimpose a number pad on the Alpha keys. Newer laptops have this built in, but since I was using PCs from the very first IBM PC, and even the first "luggables" like the Kaypros, I've found that software sites to find Utilities to do things that the manufacturers didn't include. A lot of these programs are still out there.

I've been in your situation (with the keypad issue) before, and though I no longer have any of my older Laptops or the keypad Utilities for the main keyboard, I'm pretty sure you can still find them at places like download.com, software.com, hotfiles.com, etc.

Hope you can get your main keyboard to work as a keypad, because it would really be a pain to move things with a mouse (IMHO)!

Yes, I had to play Civ II on a laptop once when I wnet on a road trip south once to CA for a couple of weeks and had to use a laptop to play Civ II. Yeah, lighting was horrible and I had to use the mouse to move my units, but it wasn't so bad after awhile. It sucked, though.

Hippo!! My friend, you are a Mac user too? He he he he he... This only thing suddenly makes you my best friend
biggrin.gif

Ok ok, you know what? I play Civ2 on my G3 Powerbook too.. Yeah moving the units up-down, left-right is all right but in the other direction, I must use the mouse, which is indeed pain in the a**, Starlifter.

Anyway, if you own a recent PC laptop, normally you have a function key that allows you to use iopkl;m,. as 123456789. So it's all right. Now a last piece of advise, my friend. Sell it and get the new Ti or even the new iBook. That's dynamite...
Yeah, look all your relatives already fight to get an ibook so why won't you?

It took me a long time to get used to playing on the laptop. And just when I finally got used to it, I made the mistake of upgrading to the Multimedia Gold Edition, little realizing that in order to play, I would now have to lug around the disk and the external CD drive. No more playing on planes. Not a user-friendly "improvement."

You might be interested to know that it is not necessary to even have a CD-ROM to play Civ II, if you use a NO-CD patch. On my computer, I have a NO-CD icon and the regular to start the game. The downside is that the wonder movies, dip screeen, advisors, etc. will not work with a NO-CD patch. But you don't even need a CD drive at all.

It is important to match the exact version of your game to the specific NO-CD patch.

Well, well, well. A Mac for a Mongol. It has a nice ring to it
smile.gif
Yes, I would love to pick up an iBook or a Ti to compliment my current iMac G3 (with the snazzy dvd drive) but unfortunately I am lacking funds with which to do so. The laptop I use actually belongs to my dad, who uses it for work, so I can't exactly go hocking it without permission
wink.gif
. So.......if anyone wants to send me a generous donation??? (hint hint hint) Maybe to gain my respect, or to earn a cease-fire against the all-mighty AZC? (hint hint)??

Well, I tried. i'll look into that function key business in the meantime.

Mmm, finally, after deep thoughts, I really wonder wether it's wise for a Hippo to use such a fragile device a laptop is. I remind you that you shouldn't seat on it with you 3 tons behind
biggrin.gif

Now, I'm willing to make a donation for you to lose weight. What about a hippo who only weights 100 Kgs? lol
Anyway you are right on one point. A mongol's perfect friend is a horse, not a G3 Powerbook, and even less a hippo
biggrin.gif

But perhaps if my horse dies, would you let me "ride" you. lol

hem, sorry sorry, I'm really tired so, as always, g'night!

Yeah, that's about the last thing I needed to hear right now. And my weight is a symbol of great pride for me. The bigger, the better, here in Hiptopia. Liposuction is for the weak.

But on a more on-topic note, I'm playing a game right now and it is very slow going. The resolution also needs adjusting. I guess I should get used to it though, because I might end up playing Civ 3 on the same laptop for months until the mac version arrives!

For once you're right. Mac versions generally come out late after the PC ver release. But generally, they don't have the original bugs and they're always enhanced versions.
Remember Civ1 for Mac? And then Civ2....
And sometimes Mac version are even released before PC (Quake 3...)
Btw, I regret that there are only whales, fish or feasants squares in Civ2. With hippopotamus, you could get 5 extras shields, plus 10 extras food and 45 extra trade. Yeah 45 trades. Because hippo skins is really demanded for women bags.
biggrin.gif
Hey, btw, Hippo my friend come here, I want to ask you something (wait I take my rifle and my knife/lancet

GenghisK, it is amazing to see someone able to wander to new topics so rapidly in one thread, LOL!

Just to round out your discussion (no pun intended!), it is slowly becoming necessary to distinguish betwenn OSs on PCs, when it comes to first releases. There have been a few games whose first PC release has been in Linux, not Windoze... so the term "Mac" will always refer to the MacIntosh, but the PC and Micro$oft Windoze are less and less interchangable.
wink.gif
And the sooner the Evil Empire of M$ is on even footing with other (better) OSs such as Linux, the better!

And I suppose you are renaming your enemies cities:
1 tons
2 tons
hippo-succion
biggrin.gif

etc...
biggrin.gif

Oh you know Starlifter, I'm sorry to slip so off-topic from CoH original point but since several days, I've found a new fun sport in CFC: Hippo teasing.
biggrin.gif
Thus, I'm having a lot of fun he he he. You can also join the fist if you want. Sorry, I meant the feast
biggrin.gif
(mmm this was a bad joke though)

Hey pal, I'd take "Fatissimo North" over "Karakorum" any day
mad.gif

Take a thesaurus, look under "Great", and you will find my city names!
biggrin.gif
You will also find the adjectives that best describe me

Yes, my MGE is very well refined and free of bugs. THough it doesn't let me rename opponents cities when I 'investigate' them with a diplo/spy

I heard some earlier versions of Civ II let you rename an opponent's city when you investigate it, LOL... maybe name his capital "Nuke Magnet"... hehe. It would be funny if the AI renamed human player cities like that, too

Not to interrupt your witty reparte, but I'd like to chime in on the Mac Laptop issue.

I have a PowerBook G3 that I'm given to use for work. I have a PC at home and use that computer for my Civ2 Classic. I travel quite a bit on business, and would love to play civ on my flights and perhpas during some "down time" while at my destinations. I wouldn't even mind the mouse usage for movements.

Questions:
1. Again, I have classic and I know that I would need the MAC version to run in my laptop. I was considering getting MGE and was wondering if there is a MAC and PC versions as well that I'd have to find.
2. How much memory does Civ2 take up on your laptop? How much would you think is necessary to play relatively well? (I'm due for a memory upgrade. My processor is 233 mhtz which should be OK).
3. Are mac versions (if necessary) difficult to find now? Will I be haunting eBay to find one?

'nuff said.

1: Yes, I play MGE on a mac, so there is a version, and
3: I don't honestly know how hard they are to find. I just walked into the local superstore and there it was on the computer gaming shelf. A good mac store should have it.

2: Well, you can choose what 'level' of installation you want. THis can cut down the level of memory required, as you could skip the scenarios. The "Complete Package" takes up about 500mb on my computer.
