I know I need to go to a technician, but I'd like a rough idea of what might be wrong.

A few days ago while I was typing, my laptop screen suddenly went black. I can still hear music etc, it's working fine with exception of the screen. After a few minutes, I can make out rough shadows on the screen, but still too dark to see anything clearly.

Remember how when you fold your laptop, it pushes a small button that will cause the screen to go dark until you open the laptop (and unpush the button)? I played around with that button, and there are very brief moments when I would be able to see the screen before it goes dark again.

I'd appreciate input on this. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: The laptop model is HP Pavilion dv1000.

It sounds to me like the switch (that the 'button' triggers) has gone bad. It could be the cable to the screen, but since you said it would flicker back on for a moment when you played with the button, it sounds more like the switch itself.

Thank you. I'll find time to visit a repair outlet sometime within the next week.
