I'm doing some focused work on my gameplay with the new patches, trying to shore up some of my weaknesses. One issue for me is that I tend to lose focus when it comes to techs. Starting in late classical, I tend to bounce around, back filling ancient techs, or choosing paths without a true plan or goal in mind.

I'm just looking for suggestions on how you tech after you finish your initial ancient era tech path.

Late Classical heading into Medieval and even Renaissance for me is usually defined by what wonders I want, since the competition is much stronger and many of the earlier wonders have game-defining utility. The big ones to me are Oracle, Great Wall, and Colossus in late Classical, and also University of Sankore, and the various religious wonders.

Typically:
Tradition start - University of Sankore then Leaning Tower, that combo typically allows any Tradition civ to slam-dunk the competition, bonus points if you got Oracle on the way. Sometimes I have to delay the rush to some degree here or there depending on culture output.

Progress - rush up to Banking, hopefully picking up Forbidden Palace along the way. This gives you a ton of the gold buildings and over time you'll build up a lot of buildings that need to be built as you backfill, and you can now get some science at the same time. It is also nice that since this one ends in a non-wonder you can't get screwed by policy number.

Authority - get Knights, kill everything. If you are planning to continue warmongering you just rush up for more military techs, if you have a peaceful transition point head for that, Banks are still a solid choice to backfill all that infrastructure you probably ignored.

Religious considerations - the religious wonders are huge game-changers as well if you can't spread (St Basil) or if you plan to ultra-spread (the others).

Final notes, if I am pretty sure I'll miss some of these wonders I'll try to adjust to pick up others so I don't just give up everything for free.

Usually I pick whatever tech I want to enter medieval era through, and I go for that. Especially with progress it is worth considering rushing a medieval era tech to double your bonus culture. I usually enter through steel, education, or theology.

I build Colossus often, its just a good combination of strong, buildable (AI takes a while to get it) and if you miss it you usually only lose 3-4 turns which weren't essential. Great Wall is top tier too.

Also if your luxury needs temples or ampitheaters, consider that path.

I'm a lot more unsure where to go in the early game with the new patches but ...
After ancient era goals which often includes greed I try to look for next goal (duh) which usually involves defense and culture.
It used to be straight into GLib but now I'd maybe go wall/barracks -> arenas instead and delay writing.
I usually go for oracle or great wall -> physics -> machinery (and then knights).
It all depends a bit on luxuries and resources around my cities also.

It really depends on the civ I'm playing with. With some, it's important I get Borobodur. With some, I have a realistic chance of the Oracle. If there's no special consideration, I aim to enter the Medieval era via chivalry for castles & knights, so that dictates that I ignore certain classical era techs.
