Late Game problems

thanks for the tips on the mining, i like my cities to grow fast, but on my next game il build more mines.

how do you guys like to space out your cities?

i used to do the 4x trick to max them out, but im finding it more fun building them closer together except my capital and a few others.

Roughly that every city has 12 tiles to work. (since it takes hospitals to make cities grow beyond 12 - and hospitals come late)
In effect it looks like xxCxxxCxxCxxxC. Where xx is a tile and C is a city.
It depends on terrain. If there's a lot of mountains, then you give the city some more space. Settle next to rivers and lakes, fill in the coast lines - so the AI won't get there.
But roughly it's 12 tiles per city.
Below is quite spacious.

Sorry to be so dumb, but how do you open the .SAV files? When I try to open them, I'm prompted to "open with" so I hit Browse and there are about 8 or 10 programs listed; I've tried them all and none work. Or am I missing something? Thanx for the help.
Another question: How do you make armies from the Military Academy? I've built it, moved units (Modern Armor) to the city, but nothing happens. The advanced buttons don't have any "load army" buttons. What gives?

To make an army you just select it form the units build as you would a warrior. The thign is you cannot make an army,if you do not have 4 towns each army.

IOW the army would be atleast the second army, so you would need to have 8 towns. If it was the 3rd army, you need 12 towns and so forth.

Sav file can be opened with several apps. Of course C3C can open them, if they are form a conquest or ptw game and the patch level is supported.

CAII and Seedbeast can open them. Normally you move the sav to the save folder for C3C or which ever game you use. Then use the load option.

Thanx vmxa. Yeah, I just saw the army build in the city production menu. Didn't think of that before, silly me. I'd been playing (C3C mostly, it's my favorite; Civ4 is a bit too pacific) off and on for years, but I hadn't realized the wealth of info in these forums. Quite a revelation! Anyway, thanx again and happy gaming on Deity (I'm still on Emperor but Demigod might be within shouting distance).
P.S. Just opened "Brennus of the Celts 370 AD" with C3C as per your suggestion. Much obliged for the tip!
