Maybe I'm the only who thinks this would be cool as a game option, but what if, when you started a game, you had a leader unit that represented you - and if that leader was killed, you immediately lost. Or they "capture" you and your civ would go through a period of anarchy until you were returned. Or, I don't know, something like that. That would probably make the game a lot faster and too simple, but it seems like a real thing ... LoL.

i think it would be cool as a expensive spy mission, if succeful causes 10 turns of anarchy until a new leader steps up but if you get caught, oh boy

they had something like that in civ3 where you had a couple "king" units and if they were all killed you lost the game.

i think they should have something where if you have "colonies" on far away islands then they can rise up and rebel and start a new civ much like the american revolution....just an idea

Yeah! And perhaps things like which gov civic you're using could reduce or increase the anarchy time!

I don't think it should make you immediately lose the game. The concept of leaders in Civ 4 is very abstract, considering the fact that last time I checked Napoleon was not alive from 4000 BC to 2050 AD. Long periods of Anarchy, though, would be realistic.

i think a 'head of state' unit that you had to protect would be a great idea. especially when coming up with things like a ww2 scenario, as in protecting william churchill or something. i dont think the idea of having the godlike leader incarnated in a unit is a good idea tho or congruent with the whole civ theme.

I like this idea maybe you coull also institute Governor units for Cities

Regicide, though incredibly unrealistic, was a nice diversion in CivIII. Basically, everyone started with a 1.1.1 King unit, and if he died, all your cities would crumble into dust. This was also used in the "Sengoku: Sword of the Shogun" (Feudal Japan) scenario. Of course, the AI was never programmed in using the King, and you could always find him in the captial city, but it was still a nice option.
