Not surprisingly, there has been an explosion of threads lately. I don't think this has been addressed yet, though, so here goes.

I've been playing the demo a lot, and it struck to me that sometimes a met leader would appear and mock you, for instance by saying how nice it is to see his favourite city-state again. See the attachment. You can either respond vindictively or neutrally. Does anyone know when it is appropriate to click "You'll pay for this in time"? And what exactly is the extra value for choosing said option, rather than saying "Very well"?

Yeah, Elizabeth opened a window just to tell me that she thinks I'm backwards and uncultured. I didn't see an "I know you are but what am I?" button.

Japanese leader called me "Soochka" ("B i t c h" in Russian).
Now I have Osaka and Tokio as part of my Russian Empire.

Lol at your picture! Imagine this pharaoh guy coming to you, in your palace, just to mock you like that. Once you have blinked your eyes at the question and stated "very well..." as an answer, he just walks away. Lol!

I once pulled up Oda, just to see if he was willing to make a cooperation pact, he told me:

"You know, just between you and me, your military is a laughing stock, don't worry, I'm sure someone will put you out of your misery soon"

MY Military?! HOW many civilizations have I conquered Oda?! HOW many City-States did I subjugate? think about it and then tell me, my military is a laughing stock.

Of course, 2 campaigns and 4 skirmish's later, saw my military decline, but it soared up when I reached gunpowder

I conquered 2 out of 10 civs(me and 9 others) and 4 out of 28 City States.

I blitzed Alexander and Ramesses

Does it make a difference if you say, 'you'll pay' over 'very well'?

Elizabeth kept mocking the size of my army.

I felt like the "okay guy" every time I replied with "very well."

I'm trying to get to the bottom of it, but my demo time is limited to 100 turns. During my last game, I got both Augustus Caesar and Alexander mocking me the same way, by saying that they were really getting tired of seeing my fase. I decided to reply vindictively to Caesar and neutrally to Alexander. When I checked the Diplomacy window, both civilizations were marked as "Hostile" (or something along those lines). I haven't yet been able to compare the long-term effects of both answers.

Ive been confused as being barbarians by the Greeks & Japanese in my English game. Out of routine I show an equal level of disrespect to them.

On the demo, I found that if you use "You'll pay for this..." a couple of times to the same leader, on the third, they'll almost certainly declare war on you. I was playing on the Prince setting.

I honestly don't think it matters all that much. Leaders will approach you once when they enter "hostile" status. It doesn't really matter what you say, because they're at hostile status anyway.

I tried the demo on Deity and when these messages come up, if you reply along the lines of 'you will pay in time', generally I have noticed that they declare war on you immediately, sack all your cities and enslave your women and children. At lower levels I have seen that the AI is a lot more lenient

Well, Elizabeth mocked me right after I became militarily inferior to her after having lost some units, since our militaries were equal in power beforehand, and I would imagine that she would've eventually declared war sooner or later, if I insulted her back. However, because I took the passive option, she merely ignored me, until I was able to raise my superior military once more.

So, I would say it is a pretty influential decision.

It's usually a sign of issues with your empire. So far only mockery of my military has preempted any invasions.

I answered always "very well", and after about 3 times she catherina declared too. I don't know it it really makes anything

I've also gotten a "Oh, hope you don't mind that I just attacked a city-state you're aligned with" mock from Rome. Oddly enough, it came a couple of turns after I convinced them (diplomatically) to end the attack. (As an aside, the "Make peace with X" diplo option is much more useful when city-states are involved.)

The 2 wars I started were to protect a city state. I am really likeing them. Although I think relations with them decay too fast. Not counting quests, just keeping 1 state at allied would consume a big part of all your money.
I went patronage therefore, did I mention I like city states?

By the way, their cities have double power than almost all the cities of the civs, including me. I prefered to attack montezuma than any citystate in may game xD
