I have played on a tiny map 16civs and have played a hole game without getting a great leader. Has anyone else had this happen (or not happen)

wow, that is pretty unlucky. How many wars have you been in and how many elites do you use?

I think this is a matter of luck, It happens that in one of my game I got no leader and the other one I got like 7-8. Why? I don't know but when I got an elite unit I heal it and then attack with it several times and most of the time this give me a leader. I'm not sure but you can't get a leader with a unit that have aldready produced one, am I right?

In a tiny map with 16 civs there are plenty of battles and plenty of elites. this was on warlord as well.

I'm sure non-militaristic, but even so...you was robbed:).

In my current game, it's about 600AD and I've already had 2 GL's. Oddly enough, both came in defense! Two elite spearman. Those kinda suck because it's such a big risk that the AI will attack again and kill the spearman and the leader. But they both survived.

Unfortunately, I've had to store my current GL for 20 turns already and may have to keep him another 40 til I can research a wonder tech. Nobody will trade tech with me, and techs are costing me 20 turns or more a pop. I hate despotism.

Wow, i have NEVER in my months of playing civ3 ever gotten a leader in defense. I always get them on the attack

I have probably had 2-3 others on defense. It was odd in this game though because I had been attacking with tons of horsemen, but got no leaders from them. My units usually get renamed '1st Cavalry Division' or '1st Armored Division', so now I have a '1st Spearman Division' in this game:).

I too have the "no GL curse", I don't count on getting them for any sort of rush because I never do! Of course I am not a warmonger and I am sure that matters. I do go through long stretches of peace time.

If I do get a GL, I alway build an army first (even if I want to build the FP). That allows you to win a battle and build the Heroic Epic, which will increase your chance of getting leaders. Also then I can build the Military Academy and use most of the rest of my GLs (as if I would get any even with the Heroic Epic) to rush things.

I have gotten gl on defense before on a large or huge map. but i got robbed in 2 games on the tiny map. both times I was the Canadians (iroquois).
I wonder..... if you played normally with 4 civs maybe you would get them, because I have only played 2wce with the 16 civs and both times No gl.
can someone else confirm that I was just unlucky or if its just the game.

You were just unlucky. However, the Iroquois are not militaristic, and that decreases the chances that you'll get a GL. Taking a veteran Mounted Warrior as an example, he would have to attack and win 8 times, on average, to be promoted to elite. After he's elite, he'd need to attack an average of 16 times to get a leader.

With militaristic, veterans would only need 4 wins on average to become elite. With many more elite units running around, it's a lot easier to get 16 elite wins and thus get a leader.

getting them to elite is not a problem. they usually go elite after 3 or 4 wins but after that is a prob. have you tried playing 16 civs on a tiny map?

No, I haven't even played standard map with 16 civs. But I've had many games where I haven't gotten a GL, despite lengthy and frequent wars. Invariably, I was playing a non-militaristic civ.

I don't like getting a leader from a defensive battle. I once attacked by a stack of 20 and my spearman won 4 and got a leader but both were kill in the sixth attack. It wasn't fun to see a leader die in battle.

OK, I'm still in the same game, and in a war against China. They sent over infantry and cavalry, which I pounded to 1 HP with arty and then killed with my own cav/inf. During this mini-attack with stacks of six infantry by China, I have already killed off TWO of THEIR GL's:) because they were produced during attacks against AI infantry. Boy, I tell ya, it's just wonderful to see an AI GL keel over dead:).

One thing is killing me though. I got a GL early in this war, but I'm probably at least 40 turns from a Wonder tech, once again (computers are closest, but I've still got Atomic Theory,Electronics,Motorized Transport, Radio, and Flight to research, and the AI already built the Hoover:mad:. I HATE wasting him on an Army, since I can build armies on my own. But as long as I have him hanging around, I can't get any NEW GL's. I now have TONS of elites, creating more every turn, but I hate wasting them when I know I can't get a new GL.

Unfortunately, the AI has been very unwilling to trade techs with me, so that isn't a very likely option:(.

I've seen games where someone used a leader to rush a temple just to use it up quickly since they were getting 3 or 4 a turn!

I'm almost considering something similar, which is rushing a factory in a coastal city that has little production. As long as this war lasts, I'm pretty much assured I'll be able to make 12 or more elite attacks every turn against 1 HP defenders. I guess the odds are in my favor to get another GL before I need it, so I could just as well rush the factory. Just seems like a waste to me. I'd NEVER use one for just a temple though.

IMO Rushing a factory is not a waste, esp' if you are still at war. If you are making even 6 elite attacks per turn use that GL. Rush a factory, rush a coal plant, rush a culture building in a border town, get rid of him because you are likely to get another soon.

Check out some of LKendter's succession games, there are a couple where he uses a GL as soon as he gets it so that he can have a shot at more right away. This is probably what col was refering to. I think he did get like 3 in one turn. This is a huge production bonus.

Oh, as an add on. This never happens to me. I have a major GL curse.

Believe me, I feel that way at times myself, almost always when playing non-militaristic civs. Unfailingly though, whenever I play a militaristic civ, I get WAY more GL's. This is my third in this game, and I bet I have 40 elites running around right now. Since I've been storing that GL, I have tried not to attack at all with elites, so every attack is with a veteran cavalry or infantry against a 1 HP inf/cav. It seems like every turn I'm getting between 2 and 6 more elites. I swear I have never had such an elite army ever!

I may need it though. China did bring a tank into the fray last night. I hope they do the usual lame-o AI tactic of sending 1-2 tanks per turn, and don't mass up 10-12, or I'm in BIG trouble:).
