Legal Copy of Civ I

Oh, abandonware sites offers some commercial games such as C&C or even master of orion 2 once :( They (the webmasters) protect themselves by saying in the disclaimer:
"... blablabla... you enter at your own risk... blablabla... you cannot keep anything you download here more than 24hours... blablabla... or don't download at all please". Surprising.

Since I know abandonware is illegal I never go there nor download games from there. That's bad :)

To be honest, I have more copies of civilization than that. I just OWN 3. I figure it's okay to make illegal copies of the rest if I have a lisence. Heck, I can only play one at a time! Which reminds me, it's been a while since I've asked about version 145.03. Does anyone have a copy of this I can copy or does it even exist? Any thoughts would be helpful.

You can make as many copies as you like. As long as you keep them only for yourself, it's perfectly legal. You are allowed to backup software. You are allowed to make tapes of music CDs you own to listen to in a car, etc. You are not allowed to distribute them or sell them.

Most software licences only allow the user to make one copy as back-up - not infinite copies.

Making any copy of music - even tapes of CDs you already own - is illegal (at least in the UK it is - not sure whether the US is the same). Similarly, making a compilation CD of tracks which you already own on other CDs is illegal. Personally I think this is stupid - I don't want to pay twice to listen to the same song. But thats the law.

Getting back to the thread about the availability of Civ I - I recently saw it on sale in a shop here in the UK for £10 (about $15). Thats just ripping the customer off - you can buy Civ 2 for that now, and other great games for £5. When customers get ripped off like this, its no wonder that people resort to illegal means to obtain their software.

Oh please.
Thats about what I paid for civ I when I first bought it (which made it half the cost of all the other games around at the time). ($30 aus money) Its been worth every cent, and if I had the choice again I would happily pay many times that amount for civ 1 if that was the only way to play it again. (Which in fact it is. Im trying to get my hands on a cheap old pentium or 486 just so I can play the dos version again which my fancy-ar## new laptop steadfastly refuses to run)
When I bought civII it cost me $70 (Aust) (thats about $30 US) and civ III cost me $50 . Both a waste of money. Played em for a week, and put em away to bring out civ 1 again.
Maybe now that kind of price is a bit expensive, but think of it in the same way you think of buying a vintage rolls royce and it makes more sense (yeh. I know the ####ards selling it at that price were just trying to rip you off and probably didnt realise it was the most addictive game in the history of the world.)

Of course civ1 is special. Definately THE greatest game of all time. Only other game that ever had such a detrimental effect on my social life and studies was Elite and that was back in the 80's and it only scores an 8.5 compared to civs 9.9/10.

(If they want a 10/10 then they can fix the dratted population & polution bugs, and Ill happily trade in every other game I own for a copy...)

I'm quite sure you can only make one copy of a CD or tape or whatever for your own use. In games I find this somewhat weird because the rule you can make only one copy really is for intelectual property reasons. Well if you have version 1 and 2 and 3 of the same game in my opinion it is the same intelectual property because there hasn't been any creative process into making a new version, just fixing bugs or minor alterations in gameplay.
On the issue of buying Civ1 now, does Sid really earn any money when you buy a CD with Civ1 on it for like 3 or 4 euro in a shop? I mean, the shop makes money on it, the CD-factory makes money on it. So that leaves Sid with what......5 cents? I think it is more a crime that he would get so little money for such a great game then it is a crime to download it for free. ;)

In Germany the copyright law says that you can make up to 7 (seven) copies of any copyrighted medium you posess. This is also probably European Law.
No real sense in discussing it though, it´s unlikely that anybody will search your house for those copies. :p
Concerning the mixed music CDs, where you burn your favorite tracks onto, you are allowed by international law to make as many CDs as you like.

The main point is NO commercial usage of these burned CDs.
:D
