Leonardos workshop question

You must have the necessary techs for upgrade. Anything found after its discovery is still same old same old.

When I was playing, a normally built leonardo's workshop worked perfectly, but a gold-rushed one did nothing, maybe coincidence, maybe something more

LW rocked for me last night. I was playing as Japanese and on a whim decided I wanted to make some knight units since I was being attacked by 2 other countries. So I started pumping out Knight armies and even after making peace with the other countries I kept one city putting out knights. Next thing I know I have about 10 knight armies so I build Leo's Workshop and POOF I have 10 tank armies. I build a few artillery units and rape the other countries. LW is VERY nice if your technology is up where it should be.

From my experiance, if you rush a tech or discover it the same turn as you build LW you wont get the upgrade for that unit, but if you get the tech for the new unit at least 1 turn before you do get the upgrade. I discovered combustion and used a great builder to rush LW and it didn't give me tanks. I had saved recently so I went back and I discovered it on my own and built the wonder later and it gave them to me.

My problem was that I discovered Metallurgy right before LW was completed - but it was still within the same turn. As a result, my catapults did NOT turn into cannons as I had hoped.

I went back to my previous saved game to make sure I finished metallurgy one full turn before I allowed LW to be finished (I put it on Trade Fair which takes longer, so that I could immediately turn it to LW when I wanted). As soon as LW was done, I went to EVERY city and fixed what was being built to make sure it was the upgraded one and not an old one from long ago that was taking a long time to build.

I did wish that if I had a rifleman (from KT or capturing city), that everything would upgrade to that unit whether or not I had it. But that perk would easily be turned into something people would corrupt.

I think you also need to have the tech to obsolete a unit. So, for instance, you need democracy to obsolete archers AND gunpowder to enable riflemen in order to get from archers to riflemen. Having democracy without Gunpowder gets your archers upgraded to pikemen.

yeah LW is glitchy to say the least

you have to have every tech up the line for it to upgrade properly. if you skip democracy (why would you but that's another debate) then you cannot upgrade to rifles or modern infantry

its a wierd system but I'm sure there is a code reason why it is that way

I had all my archers turn into riflemen yesterday after LW but I think it is because I had all the techs without rushing. In a game later yesterday I rushed to LW since another civ was making a go of it and they didn't upgrade. I know it's sketchy but I think you have to have all the lower techs in line with the units complete for it to work. VERY nice when you have 40+ archer armies suddenly convert to riflemen!

This brings another question though, if another civ has already built it will yours still upgrade if you do, and can you even build a wonder if another civ already has it?

Leonardo's is simple.

If you have the tech for a unit, and your unit is of the same lineage as the tech, finishing the building will upgrade the unit.

So:

Archers>Pikes>Rifles>Modern

Horse>Knights>Tanks ? I know I'm missing one here.

Catapults>Cannons>Artillery ? Same as above

Etc.

An example of something that is possible is to use Oxford for a random future tech and figuring out which future unit is easy to tech to. While teching, spam that unit from all cities and, in your highest production city, build the Workshop. By the time the Workshop is done, the new tech for whatever unit you want will be ready and you'll have a ton of that unit.

Note: You do NOT need subsequent techs when using Oxford nor do you need everything in the lineage of the unit in order to tech up to it. In other words, if you have archers, you do not need pikemen and rifles teched in order to get modern infantry.

The teching in Civ makes the Workshop a game winner.

The reason could have been because you didn't have a line from your old unit to your new unit. You need a clear tech line from your old unit to your new unit, however, you don't need each upgrade for it. It all depends on how you tech up. I know for a fact you don't need rifles in order to get modern from archers.

The Tech Tree makes it weird and can make it seem like you need every tech in a units lineage in order for it to upgrade but you don't.

Also, no, if another civ has built a wonder no one else can build it. This means that if they finish the wonder while you are building it you have wasted a ton of hammers.

.

Not true if you have the tech required to obsolete a unit AND the tech for a unit in that lineage it will upgrade

Def
Archer>Pike>Rifle>Modern Infantry [Democracy required for Archers to upgrade to any, Gunpowder required for Pikes, etc.]

Off
Warrior>Legion>Knight>Tank
Horseman>Knight>Tank

Siege
Catapult>Cannon>Artillery

Sea
Galley>Galleon>Cruiser

I think it qualifies as a bug since it is counter intuitive.

I noticed last night that when I built LW my archers all upgraded to riflemen. I had all the tech required for the riflemen and even a few built. My knights however did not upgrade to tanks because I did not have combustion completed. From this I think it will upgrade everything to the highest completed level of that tech tree. I could be repeating what has already been said, just stating an observation.
