i used to get +4 science from libraries but now only +2 ... did they change it in recent update ?

I'm pretty sure that it's always been +2. Were you using mods? Maybe counting bonuses from city states?

Or a scientific city state. I had that doubt in one of my last games when I saw shrines generating +10 faith, much more than temples and the tier 3 building. ¿How did it happen?. Well, it was a big map and I had been deploying my envoys to all religious city states...

City state bonuses are now much easier to get. A first meet to a scientific city state gets the envoy bonus, though it would take 2 to get to +2.

How are they easier to get?

For libraries, they are. Now 1st tier CS bonuses do not aply only to the capitol, but to all districts with 1st tier building. Previously, 1st tier building was linked to 2nd tier CS bonus. Therefore, you need to invest less envoys to get bonuses on your libraries. (It is a smaller bonus, however)

I think you need to consider the relative value of a single science yield at a given stage in the game, not just in absolute terms.

Previously you could get +2 science out of the blue right at the beginning of the game just for meeting a city state. Now you need to have already built a campus and a library to have the equivalent bonus.

The early techs cost 25 or 50. So +2 is either 8% or 4% of a total tech cost. Evidently getting that +2 quicker matters a lot.

It was also much quicker to get +4 science from a single Science city-state. You only needed a campus/library in the capital plus two envoys. Either you get the first envoy free then pay for the next two, or you use Diplomatic League to get a free one. This assuming you can't finish a quest. Right now you need 3 cities, all with a campus and a library, to get the equivalent +4 science from a single city state.

Furthermore, before you only needed a library in a city to get +2 science from three envoys. Now you need a library and a university.

The new system eventually does catch up, thought I don't see how that translates to "city state bonuses are now much easier to get."

We are talking of different things here. I won't deny "city state bonuese are now much easier to get" is a flawed argument. It is.

But this thread is about libraries, so "city state bonuses for libraries are now much easier to get" is a reasonable argument. I also stated that the value of the bonus is less, however, so "great city state bonus for libraries" may be not so right. (as you need less envoys, but double the city states).

Those libraries increase science when you have a CS with 3 envoys in a scientific CS. Great Scientists will often build you a university and a library (if you don't have one in a campus). Not only that but if you get the scientific CS 1 envoy for more science in the capital, 3 envoys for more science in a library and then more science from 6 envoys. However, libraries used to get +2 science by themselves in R&F but now libraries got reduced to +1 science in GS.
