Limited orders and automated workers. Problem with automated workers and scout move at start of turn

I like to play causual and automate my workers.
The problem is that the workers move first and then I dont have many orders left, this is fine in peacetime.
But if I fight a war, I dont want my workers to eat up the orders. The workers should be idle and I use the orders to move my troops.
One solution would be a setting, for example in the events box:
" Press this to move your workers they will consume X orders. "
Then you can move your troops and press that button and your workers will move.
An alternative solutions would be that automated scouts and workers would move after you press end of turn, using the orders you dont want to use for other things.

We have an option for that! Select "Automated Units Last" in the game options, and then any automated units will move when you end your turn, using whatever orders remain.

Even if you're playing casual though, you may want to be careful with automation. Due to the orders system, automated units in OW are inherently much riskier than in Civ, the opportunity cost is pretty high. We didn't have worker automation for a long time in OW, and even now that we have it, it's really more of a "I'm doing so well I don't really care" option.

Automated workers/scouts shouldn't cost orders at all. They are autonomous after all. You dont spend orders so you dont get to micromanage. It looks like a reasonable tradeoff to me and also simply makes sense.

Think I'd have to disagree with this. Perhaps 1/2 order consumption would be fair since there is no player deciding what's best for them, but free movement would mean an army of workers could upgrade your empire for free.

Kind regards,

As I've mentioned on discord, automated units weren't really designed for the game. They were an appeasement addition for some players. :)

Ultimately, if you can't afford 4 orders per turn for automated units, don't automate them.

thanks for putting the option in there to have them move last. the only thing i did want was the scout auto explore which is nice to keep tans on the ai w/o the micro.

auto workers would still be improving your empire, even in ways you didn't explicitly tell them.

but there's probably a mod for that. and if not, you could mod it yourself! :)
