In my game it seems like the AI civs spin off cities into colonies very often. Is there a way to whack these colonies before they can become a threat without having the whole world declare on me?

Colonies can only be created on separate land masses. So you could play on a different map type with fewer extra land masses around.

However, in big picture terms, it sounds like the diplomatic side of your game may need some work...

yeah, the whole world?

if that spin-off colony is the vassal of their master nation (which is usually the case for a long time), then just be sure you can attack and capture cities quickly. Then decide if you want to attack both the master civ and the vassal, just the vassal or just the master civ. No matter what you decide, you should have a sizeable navy and attack force. (It sounds like you play with islands or lots of landmasses). Also, the master/vassal will automatically go to war with any civ that declares war or is at war with their vassal/master. So you may have several civs declare war at once. Be prepared for this. Or attack earlier before there are multiple vassals/masters.

Don't think that you can re-supply your army with troops during the middle of the war. Sea-travel is long (usually) and quite dangerous if you aren't prepared. The AI spams caravel and then destroyers on water heavy maps. And naval warfare is purely power-based. It helps if you have the +1 movement from circumnavigating the globe first.

Well Caeser was a vassal of Hammurabi, and I wiped out the Romans, but Hamms doesn't want to make nice. How long would it normally take for the master to come to their senses?

It depends on the era. Flight and airports make it much easier to resupply your invasion force, though like you said, the bulk of the army should be brought over in the initial convoy. You can only airdrop a limited number of units per turn, so it's best to use it just to replace lost units and/or to beef up city garrisons.

Yeah, I saw Toku spam caravels to try and go after my frigates and privateers, thankfully I was able to get peace from him to go after some vassels and pump up my own empire.
