Lines under hit points

What are the lines under the hit points of a unit? Are they battles won or something like that? I've seen it under workers though also.

Yeah, right at the bottom of their hit point "thermometer", sometimes a whole bunch of lines? Anybody got any idea?

The number of lines is equal to the number of units in that stack or on that tile.

The number of little white lines equals the number of units that you have stacked on that tile.

I think 10 lines is the max though. When the English sent a stack of 72 units into my territory, it still only showed 10 lines.

It was fun hitting the stack with my artillery until the 4 or 5 infantry were all down to one HP and then sending in my cavalry to clean up the 60 or so longbowmen. The key was letting them get far enough into my lands that I could run behind them with the cavalry. Once the infantry were gone (and the handful of spearmen and swordsmen), I could almost see the look of panic on the big stack of longbownmen as my horses ran around them in circles. The only time I've never received an envoy from a leader was when my cavarly were slaughtering the stack of bowmen. I believe Elizabeth was interested in a peace treaty at the time, but I was just too busy to see her.
