Something crazy is going on in my current game. None of my cities with rivers in their city radius will grow beyond size six without an aqueduct, but all my cities without river squares dont need one. Whats going on? Am i going crazy? Help would be great. Thanks.

I've never had cities w/o rivers not needing aqueducts, but I frequently get cities that clearly have a river in their radius of 9 squares needing them. Sorry, I can't be of much help, I'm sure there must be a bug in your game somewhere - or possibly something you can alter in the editor.

I was always under the impression that your city had to be next to the river/freshwater sea in order to get the aqueduct bonus, and that assumption has always worked for me...

A good rule of thumb to use is that if a simple (no gold/luxury/strategic) terrain square near a river produces any gold, founding a city on that square will give you the benefits of the river.

it seems to me that the you need a full side to be considered next to a river so if it just catches you on a corner, you get the gold bonus but it still requires an aquaduct.
