LK106 - AWE & 20K

I monitored the cost of the sabotage and it seems our income can keep up with this, in fact I think Alesia will not speed this up. We simply need to hope 17 turns will be sufficient.
Let's hope they won't be able to nuke us. Maybe we should actually go for more steals, so we can build tank?

Once we get mass production, we can build commerical docks to give us even more money.

The Celts are cash rich. We really should have let them built the city, as we would have gained a decent amount of cash.
LK, you are such a great motivator
I got us wall street building 4 banks and 4 stock markets reducing the game by 1 turn (at this stage that's quite good), got our income up to now 450gpt, netted flight and this is all you have to say :(

Don't tell me you got 4 successful immediate steals with
regular spies without one failure.

@Tatran: I just got three in a row.

>>>SAVE<<<

1810AD-1830AD

1810
Switched Teruel to barracks.

1810 IT
Flak shoots 1 bomber, misses other 12.
Wall Street completes in Barcelona.

1812
immediately steal Mass Production.
no one has started building Hoover? :dubious:

1812 IT
Flaks kill 4/12 bombers at Teruel, but lost barracks.
lose a Cav army retreating from Anyang.

1814 IT
Flak goes 1/8 in Teruel.

1816
after my moves on this turn, there are hardly any enemies.

1816 IT
The Inca, even though they are OCC, do their part to contribute to the war effort. They land 2 longbows and a spearman.
Flak kills 3/7.

1818
MGL. I don't know how much bombers are helped by being veterans, so I build a Cav army. Our bombers are doing a fine job, I think.
Tatu (MONGOL) razed.
Erdenet (MONGOL) razed.
Toyama (JAPAN) destroyed.

1818 IT
Flak goes 1/4.

1820
Tabriz (MONGOL) razed. Mongols are done.
Monguntiacum (CELT) destroyed. 101 gold.
immediately steal Motorized Transportation.

1820 IT
Flak kills 1/3.

1822 IT
Flak kills 1/3.

1824
New Canton (CHINA) destroyed.
New Shanghai (CHINA) destroyed.

1824 IT
Celts only have 2 bombers left! ...but one attacks Barcelona for the first time in my turnset.
Culture in Barcelona has passed 19,000. 9 turns to go.

1826
Ise (JAPAN) razed.
Izumo (JAPAN) razed.
Silks founded.
Elephantine founded.
lower luxury to 0%.
immediately steal Atomic Theory.

1828
Satsuma (JAPAN) captured.
Tokyo (JAPAN) captured. Japan bites the dust.
MGL. tank army.
another MGL. rushes Airport in Barcelona.

1830
Anyang (CHINA) razed.
MGL...can't do nuthin'.

- Tokyo and Satsuma can be disbanded if you want, but wait a turn so the armies can heal.
- Celts only have 2-3 bombers.
- There is a MGL hanging out in Barcelona.
- I would just play very defensively and kill all the units coming our way.

Excellent playing and getting us flight. It looks like we will win a very close game.

Be careful about assuming that you have enough to sabatage production based on current income and current cost. I think as the wonder gets closer to completion, the cost per shield goes up. I haven't proven this, but I would be suprised if it wasn't true.

well, we have another 6 turns, maybe we can check on Alesia about the UN build.
There are only 4 nations left and I doubt that Incan would vote for Celts, we should be safe anyway. And with all the steals we don't have enough money for sabotaging.

MP, I hope you didn't use the armies to raze those towns further than 5 tiels away? Excellent progress and steal, my steals were also 2 immediate without any failure, seems to steal from fascist is pretty good. :)

From my experience in the first Dutch AWE + 20k game, this 100% true.
I simply couldn't pay for the sabotage price (2 turns to go before the U.N.
was completed, about 7000 gold) and lost the game.

The mission is allmost completed,so my congratulations.

:wallbash: I don't know what smilies to use to describe my dissappointment here. At any rate, razing these cities didn't affect the fact that this game has been in the bag for awhile. If LK wants to impose a penalty, such as disbanding an army + something, that would be good, since I gained an army with these cities. On the other hand, I would've handbuilt more cities had I remembered the variant. I built 2 and have a settler waiting. I didn't build more settlers on account that I would have these cities captured.

As for Tokyo and Satsuma, the army was on the 5th tile, attacking the 6th. I don't consider this against the rule, but I could be wrong. Technically, Satsuma was captured first, but I could've done it the other way around just as easy.

Sorry to all, I think I wouldn've learned my lesson by now.

On a positive note, I'm glad we will soon be victorious. :)

Karakorum is razed for $0. This is the end of the Mongol razing, as there are no more cities in army range.
Armies may NOT be used more then 5 tiles from our cultural borders.

This is absurd. MeteorPunch, this is the second time you have blown the variant rules. If this game weren't ending with Sanabas turn I would have invalidated the whole turn.

I am so glad I am stopping the LK series. These mistakes annoy me to no end.

EDIT: While MP realize the mistake, it still tainted this game big time. I really don't feel it is a proper variant when this happens.

Remember 10 turns per round - STRICT 24 hours got it, total 48 hours to at complete.

Additional restrictions:
Armies may NOT be used more then 5 tiles from our cultural borders.

Leaders may ONLY be used for armies or to rush a building / small wonder in the 20K city. If you can't form an army the leader must go to the 20K city.

The game MUST be won by 20K - period.

This is the standard LK AW type game with NO initial trading.

Sorry LK, but I think you are overreacting. I didn't play it right, and I'm sorry for that, but the outcome has not been changed one bit. A few Mongol longbowmen and whatever stick weapons they have couldn't hurt us. I have had too many units on my last turns so that the AI can't even throw enough units at me to kill.

We can argue this one forever, and I will agree to disagree.

It really doesn't matter as this point, as the LK series is done at least until Civ4, if not forever.

1830 AD
Alesia still shows 19 turns for the UN. With almost no bombers left, this one is in the bag.

At this point there is no reason to report the casualties.

I see no value in the Japanese cities with a handful of turns to go. I sell of the buildings in Satsuma, and abandon it. I can't get back the money from rushing the walls.

1832 AD
It is nice having bombers, and being able to sink some of these annoying AI ships. :D

I abandon Tokyo after selling what I can.

1834 AD
I have no land units in range worth killing.
(IT) The Celts kill our infantry in a fort by Vigo.
I see the first MA units arriving from the Celts.

1842 AD
(IT) We officially win by 20K.

==========================

Summary:

We spent 86 hours to complete this game. I know there are a few dead hours as I often get real life interruptions during the game. Still, it does show how rough this game was.

The LK series has just one game to be wrapped up. I have just 2 SGs left to complete my Civ3 run.

Congrats to the team on a *very* difficult win. It felt the game was over more then once. If the resources didn't break way with coal, we wouldn't have made it. Even a couple of tricks such as the one turn salt city may have been the difference. It was painful to realize how close it was when we were stuck for growth.

   Yay! :D

A very tough and very close game is finished. If a few little things didn't go our way, we probably would've lost. Those mid-turns were probably the toughest I've ever played as far as having to use every unit to it's most effeciant and even still hope for some luck a few times.

Thanks for hosting it LK, 'twas a good variant. A man can only play so much Civ, so enjoy your time away, freeing the mind of civ thoughts.

very nice variant where every move mattered right until the end. That's what I like about this game. You can't say it's wrapped up until the very end.

and of course, congrats to the Team for very good play. Looking forward to LK hosting Civ4 games.

Good work everyone. It was difficult to balance Infrastructure and military and had to balance on a very thin edge. I think we did a good job given our start. We had enough military to not lose, and got enough Infra so we could win just in time. I think at times we were short on military, but given how little infra we had, building pure military wouldn't have helped much - just a few more knights. We were simply short on shields overall.

I agree our mistake in this game was concentrating too much on the 20k at the beginning to have the shields for a conquest win. On the other hand, doing this allowed us to win before the UN was built, so it worked in the end. It was the first "real" 20k game where we couldn't get a conquest/dom win and then sit around waiting for the win, so in that sense the game was a success.

I really didn't think about this, but I must agree. Due to the narrow peninsula we had there were far to many coastal cities. Fishing villages don't win AW games.

Sorry to see you go,LK.I've been reading your games for years, right back to the time when you said that you didn't feel ready for monarch level.I've had many hours of entertaining reading of your series.
Thanks a lot.

I'll second what the Colonel said. Even though I haven't played much Civ in the last year or so, I still take time to read the exploits of others in the Succession Game forum.

Lee - Here's hoping to see you back here when Civ 4 comes out. Looking forward to the next series of LK games (I'm pretty sure you won't be able to stay away)...
