Well I feel dumb but I can't figure out how to get any units into the galleys. It's probably obvious but I have searched for some time for an answer now. Since I get a helpful little message at the top of my screen all the time saying I have not posted and to ask a question I thought I would give in and ask even though it seems like a pathetic thing to have to ask about.

Just either move a unit onto a Galley that is next to a land tile.
Select a unit and right-click the galley that is next to a land tile.
Have the Galley in a city, select a unit and click the 'board transport' icon at the bottom.

Galleys can tranport 2 units, Caravels transport 1 non-military unit, ie. Missionary, GP.

Thanks I will try that now. I wasn't getting any board options showing up but I will look again.

What unit type were you trying to load into the Galley.I might be mistaken but one of the early ships can't hold settlers and things.

To the OP, I know this doesn't really fall under what you originally asked, however it is a decent tip when it comes to loading/unloading troops and that is when boarding a ship, it consumes the units remaining turns. Unloading from a ship via movement consumes the remaining turns of the unit. Unloading whilst in port does not consume any turns the unit may have so you can still move that unit elsewhere after the unload itself. Very handy if that unit is needed somewhere quickly.
