I've been wondering, why is there a "Grant a loan of gold" in the diplomacy screen?

Sid knows for what it is there for. Same for the 'map-trade,' and the 'peace-offer' options.

Just ignore them and use the normal way to do diplomacy ("We would like to propose a deal")

Because you can take out loans with the AI.

There is a major scoring game in the HOF where Moonsinger (I believe) kept Kathy in near bankruptcy for a full game by borrowing all her money at great interest rates. Great read. I'll look for it later and post a link to it.

I'd imagine that you must be at higher gaming levels, right? I've played from cheiftain to regent, and I've never come across a time when the AI actually gives you a loan

is there usually a time in the game/difficulty level where its actually easier to get loans?

There is a SID SG going atm that is using that tactic - reading through it may give you more insight.
