I brought home a new Logitech G15 gaming keyboard yesterday. I bought it mostly for the back-lit keys that will let me play games in the dark without hitting the wrong keys, but it also has 18 programmable macro keys, two USB ports and a nifty little monochrome LCD display that can be configured to show various info. The LCD is pretty useless out of the box, but you can download utilities off the web that display cool stuff on it.
Anyway, while browsing the Logitech site, looking for software updates, I noticed that Civ IV was listed as one of the handful of games that currently "support" the keyboard, whatever that meant. I fired up the game and was greeted with a low-res rendition of the CIV logo on the panel. I shrugged, started a SP game and promptly forgot about the LCD until later when I realized that it was displaying the last four game messages that appeared in the upper-left corner of the Civ IV screen, along with the game year. Cool...
Now, that's not a reason to run out and buy the keyboard, but it's kind of nice to be able to quickly read the messages you might have missed earlier when they faded off the screen, without calling up the log window or using a mod. It's also interesting that one of the programmers at Firaxis took the time to throw that little feature in the last patch. I wonder if this came from a deal with Logitech or if one of the devs simply had bought one of those keyboards for himself and decided to add a little bit of code to use the extra display...
