Looking for an old game

I've been looking for this game for a long time. Some 15 years ago, alongside with all the fancy strategy games, i used to play and enjoy a couple of indie strategy games. One of them was Sean O'Connor's Slay.

The second one I can't recall the title. It had poor graphics like Slay, it took place around 300 BC in the Mediterranean and you could pick among some 20 nations (Romans, Macedonians, Egyptians, Seleucids, Cartaginians etc).

You controlled some cities and 1-2 armies. You couldn't do much with the cities they were just there to provide taxes and people so you can build armies. The cities you could also fortify by spending money. The cities had a degree of how poor or rich they were. Richer cities were usually better fortified or protected by armies.

The armies would consist of 5-6 different unit types (light cavalry, heavy cavalry, archers, infantry etc) which could be recruited according to money and population. You could also hire mercenaries. Armies could move up to 20 tiles per turn according to terrain.

You could also build ships in order to transport your armies.

The goal was of course to crush enemy armies and conquer cities within a time frame. Obviously the game was turn based.

Any help on the name would be greatly appreciated, i would probably recognize the game by a single screenshot. To be honest I don't expect anything as the game is probably very unknown and old, but in any case thanks a lot in advance.

That sounds a lot like Rome: Total War.

these graphics are better than of the game im talking about

i'll look into rome:total war maybe it's a remake

Rome: Total war will be extremely different since it wasn't that badly restricted by technology. However, tis totally worth getting (especially for the mods which make it 10 times better).

You pretty much summed up RTW here. I think that'll you'll like it a lot.

even though RTW looks awsome. it probably requires more time and effort to get a hold on it than i am currently willing/able to spend. I was looking for the old game cause it is really simple to learn and play as you don't really need to do more than 5 things. It is an excellent time killer with way worse graphics than civ1 (armies where a simple drawing in a square). Great gameplay though. Anyway, I will try to keep this thread alive for a couple of days just in case someone who knows about it sees it. thanks for your interest guys.:)

Actually, to be honest you just need a credit card and about $10 to pick up the gold edition of RTW. Amazon.com sells it as a downloadable edition, for instance. I'd play a demo though, since combat is not resolved abstractly, but as a table-top miniatures game as a hybrid turn-based/real-time (you can pause the clock to issue new order).

Sorry I can't imagine what the game you're describing is, other than maybe free-civ/civ2/Call to Power. There is also civevo

Found it :)
