I've had some experience with Civilization in the past (well, Civ II Gold, anyway ... always been my favorite), and when I found out about this, I thought I would give it a try.

But after trying to start a couple of games, spending several hours, and not seeming to get nearly as far as what I used to do in Civ II, I thought I would try and see if I were doing something wrong, or if the game just develops far more slowly than I was originally figuring.

So how does one try to build a city far enough to start branching out into some different things, when it seems to take so incredibly long to build up population beyond 3? I tried beginning with two farmers, one orchard and a granary, then added one worker and and lumber mill, but it has taken me four hours to build up to the point of being able to add a second worker, and it will take much longer to be able to build up enough food to get population 5 and 6 so I can add a scientist and a merchant.

While I have tried to be wise with these (the two farms, granary and orchard all in a square, and right on the water, leading to very happy people, very productive, and so on ... and the same for the lumber mill), am I actually completely missing the boat on what I am doing? Or do I just need to expect things to take a very long time?

Anyone willing to help guide the noob a bit?

Read punctuator's resource gathering guide, and then TALK to people in your game to get yourself into an active civ.
