Lost Eden development thread

Been a few busy days! I should have my PC back soon (will ring them in the morning). I managed to cast one of my friends as a few of the characters, which means some of the quotes are recorded now. :)

JH24 should be back soon. I'll email him with the latest version whenever he's ready. :)

Are you able to record quotes without the PC?

His comments will be interesting.

Yes I can! I will probably rerecord the ones I did previously as some of them have been changed since.

His comments will be interesting.
That they will--

The phone just rang and my PC is ready! So I will go and pick it up after prayer and get everything back on it. Hehe I have lots to do today all of a sudden!

Did I see the changed ones?

Do you have to restore the PC from a backup?

Did I see the changed ones?
It's not a case of see, but hear. :)

Do you have to restore the PC from a backup?
Fortunately, not really! They put my old hard drive in the machine too, so I just copy things over as I need them. I haven't had much of a chance to do much LE wise today (did some videos for my channel as they haven't had anything for 2 weeks) and I do have a friend over tomorrow/the next day, but I will do what I can to get stuff done!

Here is my checklist that you wanted to see. It's a little dated--we since agreed on a lot more promotional stuff to be created before beta, and that recorded quotes could wait until afterwards.
  • Record Tristan/Oblivion/Meora/Navius quotes
  • BETA CHECKPOINT
  • Bioscans. I have 20 days to do this from time of writing until the trial expires
  • Advertise properly
  • Get feedback from more than one player
  • Cast and record all remaining quotes
  • Cast and record the EVA (computer readout person)
  • Write Tech Longs (seen on technology screen)
  • Artwork: Title Screen, bad, break, cloud, forgr, fung, liberate*, seized, starv, unitfound, new resource discovered, holobooks, report, main menu, perhaps others
*remember that most of them have a large monolith version*
  • Remaining sounds, such as unit selected, attacking noises and so on
  • Make a website for the game (I've been toying with the idea of making a dev blog for all my projects/art in general, which would work)
  • RELEASE CHECKPOINT

  • Cast and record the EVA (computer readout person)

What does "EVA" stand for?

  • Write Tech Longs (seen on technology screen)

That is something we can start now!:)

  • Artwork: Title Screen, bad, break, cloud, forgr, fung, liberate*, seized, starv, unitfound, new resource discovered, holobooks, report, main menu, perhaps others

What is the large monolith?

Nice checklist. Very thorough.

What does "EVA" stand for?
EVA is a term that hails from the Command and Conquer Tiberian series. It stands for "Electronic Video Agent". The EVA is the voice that calls out events such as "Unit Lost" or "Construction Complete" and so on. It's a common thing in RTS games, and it's present in Alpha Centauri as well. Most games do not call the voice anything, but C&C calls it the EVA, so I use that term for any game with "a voice". :)

(hopes that makes sense )

[Techlongs are] something we can start now!:)
Almost! There's interludes to write first! My plans for today are getting all the quotes that can be recorded recorded and ingame, and then doing some interludes and perhaps some art to finish up.

What is the large monolith?
Do you remember that large grey monolith that appears whenever you do something for the first time, like build a facility or complete a tech? That thing. :) I noted it as some of the pictures used for normal popups are the same as those big ones on the monolith.

Nice checklist. Very thorough.
Thank you sir. :)

Information: Today is the 4th. The 14th is the first day of this year of Uni. I'd like to have the beta realised by that stage if at all possible! Tomorrow I am out at another tournament although other than church on Sunday I do not have another plans for the week (hope to keep it that way so I can get some stuff done! :D)

I have PMed JH24 to see how he is going.

EDIT: Interlude action:

This interlude occurs when the city that owns the unit that attacked and killed the first Carnivine is seized.
Spoiler :
You have done it. $BASENAME5 is yours. The people that killed $ASSISTANT8 so violently and heartlessly have been bought to justice. You find it hard to hold back a feeling of satisfaction knowing that you have avenged $ASSISTANT8. But you know better than to let such emotions cloud your judgement: $ENEMYADJ7 forces remain to the $COMPASS4 and it is imperative to keep alert for any $ENEMYADJ7 retaliation.
As a final act of gratitude to $ASSISTANT8 you have dedicated the city to him under its new banner of "$BASENAME6". May your people never forget his undying loyalty until the very end.
A nagging thought presses in from the dark recesses of your mind: why did that dragon inform you of $ASSISTANT8’s death? What could he gain from your victory?

Remaining quotes include the ecological damage sequence (about 3-4 interludes long) and victory. I'm not quite sure what I will do with those just yet.

Now I do. It is one of the things I turn off.

That is certainly doable.

Good.

You could make the eco-damage one an attack by Meora. For the victory one, you were talking about revealing the final mystery of Meora.

Maybe you should PM Petek and drop the "alpha" from the title of this thread.

Thanks for the response! I'll try to keep the work coming through. As for the thread renaming... hehe there'll be plenty of that when the beta's ready. :D

Hehe I tried to set up an internet game with Jordan over in Sydney for the last three hours and failed really hard. Oh well.

PMed Petek about the thread rename.

As far as work on this goes, I hope to get some done pretty soon. Today and yesterday have been full on with stuff (I'm really zonked out at the moment--going to have an early night)!

Tomorrow's plans involve doing all the recordings for the week (so probably 2 hours there) as well as other misc. jobs I have to do that I have put off until now. I should have half a day... getting either interludes or recordings done would be ideal there.

Unfortunately I failed to get time to approach Lost Eden in a big way today. :( Videos took a lot longer than they should have done. It's 11:23 PM and rather than try and squeeze something in I'd rather give things a fresh go tomorrow.

Some good news, however: JH24 has responded and said that he should be able to give the game a beta test. His PC is on the brink at the moment and will soon be replaced, but he thinks he can give the game a start at the least.

I plan to try and get a website up within a week or two if possible. I don't have the funds for a domain name at the moment but I'll see what I can do. It is, however, a second priority to this mod.

Yes, he should already have it. :)

EDIT: And here's the first interlude for the day: Winning the game.

Spoiler :
It's over. Eden is yours. It seems like only yesterday that you arrived here, naked and alone, and now you rule this world. Leaning back, you relax against a nearby pillar, enjoying some time to sit alone. You chuckle at the irony of it all--you arrived naked and alone, and now you're naked and alone again.
"Well done $NAME1." You sit up quickly. Sounds like you aren't as alone as you thought. Horror grips you when you recognise who has arrived--that voice, that colouration, that pride--it's Meora!
"What do you want Meora?" you demand. He ignores you and is still moving closer to you.
"I'm grateful really. You've this made ever so easy for me", he continues.
"What do you mean?"
With that, Meora stops walking, and then triumphantly responds, "Your efforts have paved the way for my ultimate victory!"
"I'm not going to help you, Meora, whatever you want!" you shout.
"You already have", he softly replies, sitting next to you. "You have swept this world before you. You control it all. And how do you think that happened?" You don't reply, so Meora continues. "I was helping you. I manipulated the events leading to your success."
"$ASSISTANT8", you interrupt, "you killed him didn't you."
"But of course!" Meora replies, "As cute a charmander as he was, $ASSISTANT8 was of more use to me dead than alive. His death caused you to go blind with rage, and was instrumental in allowing you to take control of this world."
"You're a monster", you murmur softly. And it dawns on you: everything you have done, have accomplished, has done nothing more than advance the plans of this dragon. Meora laughs evilly.
"At last you are beginning to understand." He steps up, and then activates his wrist-mounted card device. "With one final act, I can seal you away, and then I shall take control of your body, and with it, rule not only this world, but more worlds beyond!"
Nervously, you stand up, and prepare for what could be your final moments.

EDIT2: I've changed all the assistant names as the assistant is now a boy. I can confirm that the afore mentioned Caretakers bug indeed happens with patched SMAX. More to come as I complete it!

EDIT: And here's the first interlude for the day: Winning the game.

Excellent! Have you done the part that introduces the game? (In vanilla SMAC, it is the text you get upon landing on Planet.)

Post it at CGN.

Yay! Thanks. I'll get into the others shortly. :D

There are two pieces of text that relate to starting the game. The intro popup, and the initial help popup. Following:

"Planetfall":
Spoiler :
$NAME3, a new era of struggle and opportunity awaits you. One
night you were sleeping in your bed, and now you wake up here...
Welcome to a brand new world, where all the rules have been changed!
You now shape the destiny of your $<M1:$FACTIONADJ0> faction. May
the $<M1:$FACTIONADJ0> endure forever!

"Landfall":
Spoiler :
Your colony pod has arrived in Lost Eden; its stores have
been used to found your first city, $BASENAME0. You can use the $UNITNAME1
unit which is now active to explore the surrounding area. It can
also be used for defence if necessary.

is based, and you would like a tour of the interface, click the {TOUR} button.

Do you think that those are good enough? :)

Post it at CGN.
Consider it done... well give me a few minutes first and then consider it done.

EDIT: Yeah it's done now.

"Planetfall":

It doesn't quite match the victory interlude, where it says you start alone. Perhaps something about a wandering tribe sees you magically appear and make you the leader.

"Landfall":

Similar comment to the first. Instead of colony pod, maybe caravan (or something that conveys a group of nomads that settle).

Do you think that those are good enough? :)

I think these are good places to start the story of Meora.
