Hindsight is easy, but perhaps you gentlemen should have worked walls (10 shields for a militaristic civ, unless I'm overlooking some recent change) into your build sequence. With the spearman allowed to complete in the 3000 BC IBT, and then walls in the 2900 BC IBT, you would have had reasonable prospects of survival.

Steve, you were just victimized by God's sense of humour. You're known to favour quick games, and in this case He provided one....
