LotR4 - 5CC Conquest

Just to make things interesting, I am afraid I will have to ask Jaffa to swap with me for this round. I have a heap big project deadline at work and so won't be able to touch this before the weekend.

Razed Moscow, Yakutsk, St Petersburg, and somewhere beginning with K :)

Russia has built some galleons -- our samurai sank one in St Petersburg.

We finished the Herioc Epic, and celebrated by promoting a new Great Leader.

Barb camps popping up all over. I started building swordsmen in New Kyoto as cheaper units to replace samurai in barb-busting.

1350AD

1350 AD (Pre-turn)
Barbs attack in the north, spot a Russian Galleon off our coast.

1355 AD (1)
Kill the first barb in two camps, Sammi's arrive outside Sverdlovsk.

1360 AD (2)
Sverdlovsk is razed. Slag two barb camps. German caravel appears off our coast. Rome and England sign a peace treaty.

1365 AD (3)
Troops approach Smolensk and Minsk. Attack German ship, it only loses one hp. It then turns tail and runs.

1370 AD (4)
Raze Smolensk, the troops at Minsk wait for the healing army, as the city has muskets.

1375 AD (5)
Attack Russian caravel, take it to one HP. Slag a barb camp

1380 AD (6)
Nada.

1385 AD (7)
Army arrives outside of Minsk.

1390 AD (8)
Novogorod razed.

1395 AD (9)
Minsk is razed with three settlers in it and more workers. We killed 5 muskets over 2 turns and only lost one Sammi. Troops land outside Rostov.

1400 AD (10)
Rostov is razed.

The era of the Sammi is rapidly coming to a close. With Muskets on hand we need Cav to start in on the Germans.

LotR4 1400 AD Saved Game

It's back to me. RL is still kinda weird for me right now; I won't have time to play before Sunday sometime, and have Epic Nine to finish and my own game (TH2) to play as well. I think I'll sneak this one in first, though, since it plays pretty quick.

Arathorn, if you can play now and want to, we could swap again this round?

Great game so far guys :D. But Germany is looking mighty tough. Don't forget that they did build the great wall (so make sure they have metallurgy before you seriously go after them). Keep on going, it's a great read :).

Inherited turn:

How long ago did Germany start Magellan's? We would really REALLY like to have that. I'll save the Leader for it. I plan to make peace with Russia right around the end of my turn to get their techs including Navigation, leaving them with probably one city.

Minas Morgul and Leon build libraries in preparation for the upcoming Military Tradition research.

All the samurai currently close to home I'm going to keep there until Cavalry upgrades. They aren't going to get anywhere in time to help, and they can't be upgraded once they're overseas.

1415: Germany lands three knights on our home continent. We lose one samurai in dispatching them.

1430: Doomed Russia starts building Newton's. :)

1435: Vladivostok FINALLY gets razed - had to wait forever for the samurai (including the army) to heal.

1440: Metallurgy at minimum science comes in. Set to Military Tradition at max, due in 11.

1450: Grozny had two muskets that held out against about eight samurai, but FINALLY fell.

I decide to make peace with Russia now, since I can't imagine we have much longer at all before Germany completes Magellan's. Peace with Russia nets us:

Music Theory
Democracy
Navigation
Physics
51 gold/turn (how the HELL do they have that much to offer?!)

Inexplicably, Russia has Theory of Gravity and Magnetism, but Germany doesn't! Now is the time to blast Germany with cavalry as fast as possible before they get to their free Nationalism. Germany is three techs away from the Industrial Age, and MIGHT waste their time researching some optional techs. We've got 10 turns till Military Tradition to get boats in place and more Samurai to upgrade.

Next leader (back to Arathorn) can decide whether to pay Russia for Magnetism so that we can build better boats while researching Mil Trad.

Played 10 turns but took horrible notes.

England and Rome were easily convinced to attack Germany....they're both eliminated now, leaving only Germany and Russia as powers.

Russia actually frightens me a bit more than Germany, because Russia's two techs ahead of us and very near Nationalism, whereas Germany is behind us techwise and only had (correct tense) two sources of saltpeter.

I highly recommend two courses of action:
- War with Russia once the peace treaty has expired. (Obviously with troops in position by that time)
- Abandoning old Babylon and much of old China to send those troops to the front.

I didn't actively do the second because the ships were involved in other pursuits (saltpeter pillaging and prepping for cav transport). The sams in the SE are to serve as a lightning rod to make it easier for cavs to survive.

I recommend London as the first cav target and that the left-over Russian sams be used against Frankfurt. Frankfurt is easy to reach from old Russia and has the Great Wall, definitely worth destroying ASAP. (London has Sun-Tzu, another quick razer if I ever saw one.) I think once those two cities are gone and the bulk of reinforcements arrive on Germany, they'll fall pretty quickly. This may even have been my last turn....

BTW, it should work very well with all our 20+ shield cities to do one turn of shields into something, change to musket and buy and then change back to cavalry for beaucoup savings and a turn or two quicker production. We have the cash.

I did NOT buy Magnetism. It might be worth it. I think caravels will do for now, but the ability to put our sam army on a boat might be high enough to justify buying Magnetism. Up to the next leader.

"Order" is meldor, Jaffa, T-hawk.

We have to keep up the offensive pressure. Finishing Germany off (or doing so for all practical purposes) before they get Nationalism is pretty important.

Arathorn

1500 AD (Pre-turn)
Give Russia saltper, iron, WM and 140g for Magnetism. She can't build enough units it do anything anyway. Mundburg and New Kyoto both switch to Galleons automatically. Spot German Caravel off our coast.
(I) The forward Sammi take out an archer, promotes, takes a kinght and then retreats when attacked by a sword. One Sammi in the back takes out a Knight. One nice thing about per-rail invasions is that the troops trickle to the hot spot. German's start Newton's Unversity.

1505 AD (1)
Move cav to follow the German caravel. Start waking up most of the Sammis and moving them into New Kyoto for up grade and shipment to Germany.
(I)The three stranded Sammi's make a good stand, taking out two more knights but they are over-run.

1510 AD (2)
Land to Caravel with Sammi's and Cav, upgrade 6 Sammis to Cav and 2 Caravels.
(I) The fresh troops are attack and on the first victory we get a GL (only my second GL ever on defense.

1515 AD (3)
We kill 5 knight and a long bow. York is razed. Upgrade 3 more Sammis. Block German Caravel form sailing between our island and the big land mass.
(I) We lose 5 of the freshly landed troops, taking out 4 knights, but it wasn't pretty and won't be until we can get an army there for defense or German runs out of first line troops. The German caravel turned to go in the other direction. I rush a frigate for 84g to kill it.

1520 AD (4)
Chose not to land the three cav in the Caravel. I will wait until they will get more than just slaughtered.
(I) Our last Cav on German soil is over run. The Sammis on the saltpeter have been killing one knight a turn, this time they lose one of their number. As expected, the German caravel turns around again once the block is moved.

1525 AD (5)
Our frigate, takes the German caravel and they will be making no landings anytime soon. Four full Galleons are now in route.
(I) Nada.

1530-1540 AD (6)
Lots of troop movemnet, unload GL on island to form army.
(I) During the last inter-turn four knights attack the salpeter Sammi's and we kill three. Now that most of German's knights have been pulled in that direction we can begin to land the troops.

1545 AD (9)
Unload 15 Cav on the German island.

1550 AD (10)
Salsbury is razed. London is razed and with it goes Sun Tzu's AoW. I hope Bizzie sold all of his Barracks. Hastings is razed. Thats all I can reach this turn.

I forgot about the city number restriction on armies, we can't build anymore. The GL is in Minas Ithil and can either build the military acadamy or JS Bach's or wait for something else.

LotR4 1550 AD Save Game

First turn, Russia calls to renegotiate peace. This is obviously a sneaky underhanded ploy to get out of paying us that 51gpt, so we refuse. Too bad this automatically cancels our trade deal with them :satan:

Why is there no option to negotiate different terms when a Civ comes to demand a peace treaty renewal?

Germany sent hordes of knights up against our samurai guarding their northern saltpeter supply, and reclaimed it in 1560AD.

Our cavalry swarmed across Germany. We razed Nottingham, Coventry, Newcastle, Warwick, Oxford (are we sure this is Germany? :) ). Also Bonn, Dortmund, Nuremburg, Rome, Veii, Brandenburg, Neapolis, and Cologne.

Samurai saw action again on the Russian island, taking Moscow and an undefended St Petersburg. But Russia has a rifle in Riga.

The eastern continent is being overrun by barbarian horsies. We lost some unimportant colonies.

I disbanded our samurai army and used the GL to make a new one with cavalry.

1600AD

Good job, Jaffa! I looked at the saved game last night and I don't think this one will last more than 10 turns. The longest part may be taking the Russian mini-island.

Inherited turn:

Do the musketman-rush thing to get cavalries one turn sooner from 3 cities, and swap tiles in Mundburg so it can produce a cav this turn at -3 food.

I jump Nationalism research to max - with 3200 gold in the bank, we may as well run a deficit, and mobilize for war if we do get it. It's due in 12.

Russia will cede Kharkov and Riga for peace... so we could wipe them out real quick with a Phony Peace Treaty, but I won't do that. :) It is, however, going to take approximately forever to get boats of troops all the way up to Kharkov.

1605: Hannover razed. Bremen razed. I decide to go Powell Doctrine, and send six cav in boats going towards Kharkov.

1610: Munich had more defenders than I expected; it goes down to a longbow but that forces my last attacking cav to retreat. But Hamburg is razed. I have seven Samurai at Riga, they'll try their luck against the rifle... the third one kills it. Astrakhan now only has spears and is stuck building Newton's, heh.

1615: Munich falls.

1620: A German knight kills a cav, but I put a stop to that by pillaging their horses. An elite musket in Heidelburg wins TWELVE straight hitpoints off our cavs, but eventually loses and Heidelburg is razed.

1625: Astrakhan razed, Russia down to one city. Liepzig razed.

1630: Konigsberg razed.

1635: Frankfurt razed, and 6 cavalry finally land at Kharkov - which only has spears. :crazyeye:

1640: Kharkov destroyed, along with Russia. Stuttgart, on Germany's southern island, razed - it had earlier held out against a four-cav attack.

I saved Berlin for last because I wanted to get the cannons and fully-healed army up to it, and because it was stuck building a wonder (no more defenders.)

1645: Germany's other city on the southernmost island razed. So is Berlin. We win!

Pictures coming in next post.

edit: Oh, and Germany never did get Nationalism. :goodjob:

Here's the replay; if you can't see it get a browser that can show PNG images. :) It's from 1550. In only twenty turns we demolished a civ four times our size and a ways ahead of us on the power graph!

lotr4-replay.png

2460 points, and we got a really appropriate title from the ranking screen :D

Great job, everyone! Now can we try it on Deity? :)
