I have incense within a cities boundaries and connected by road, yet when I go to look at my luxury box, it's still empty? What's the reason for this? It's my first game of C3C and I just don't understand at all why this is 'broken'. Patching problems maybe? You don't need any techs to use luxuries do you?

Uhhh.....post a save?

Only thing I can think of is that the luxury isn't connected via roads to your CAPITAL city--in which case only the cities that do connect to that luxury can use it. Did you check the luxury box for the city that's next to the luxury? If there's a road from the luxury to that city, then that one city, at least, should have it.

I checked my game again and I can now see that the luxury is outside of city boundaries...I thought that you could just connect a luxury via road to the capital and then it would be in my luxury box? I guess not?

If the luxury (or any other resource) is outside the cultural spread of your empire, you need to road out to it and then build a colony on the resource. Or found another city on it...

either that or you don't have it roaded to the city you are looking at. or to the capitol city

Well I have it roaded to my capital but it's outside of cultural influence. I didn't know about the colony thing though. Thank god as I REALLY need that happy face so I can get more people working. *Snaps whip
Thanks for the help guys. You're a LOT warmer to newbies than any other forum I've seen in a LONG time.

If you need more happy faces, you can always raise the luxury slider temporarily.

Usually you get a "Welcome to CFC!" edit, after someone notices you're new.

Fortunately here, we usually remember that we were all noobs once. Ulchieman15 , check out the Too Old To Play thread, if you haven't already. That may be part of the reason that we're a bit nicer here. Civ players tend to be a bit older. I've gone on record several times that even our 'kids' here are more mature than others their age. Could be, tho, that we're just nicer! :)

Hey this may be a stupid question, but why can I not see the option to build a colony for my workers? Or...does it take an actual settler to build a colony?

I'm guessing that the resource you're trying to colonize is inside your cultural borders? If so, then you don't need a colony to get the resource, just a road to it. If it's outside your cultural borders then you get the option to colonize it.

thanks for the quick reply - outside my cultural borders. no option when i position the worker over it.

And you have a road going from one of your cities to it? Hmmm....post a save, will ya? I'm off to bed, so I can't look at it, but someone else will.

You may need to turn on the 'advanced worker action buttons' option in the preferences screen to see the button.

Otherwise, it is the 'N' key.

Check the civlopedia if memory fails on the details.

In the long run you need to put a town there, though. Otherwise another civ will come along and plop down a town nearby.

Are you sure the resource you are trying to get is a luxury or stategic resource? You can't build colonies on gold and stuff like that.

LOL, yeah I did that on my first Civ III game. I hadn't read the manual or anything, just started playing. My worker probably spend about 40 turns building a road out to a gold resource. When nothing happened, I tried mining it and still no effect. I had put a colony on something else and kept trying to figure out why I couldn't put a colony on the gold. What a fun game though, I wish I still had some of the saves from it around just for the laugh factor.
