After establishing embassies I've noticed that the AI always tries to trade for all the luxuries. I only buy as many as I need to stop riots in my cities. I know that having all would boost your score, but is it worth losing so much money for it?

I never trade for all of the luxuries. If I'm missing one or two I may trade to get those. I tend to only have one or two when I start, but when the inevitable AI attacks happen it gives me a good excuse to try to take a couple. Also, I've cranked up the AI trade ratio thing in the editor in an attempt to slow down tech trading (it works :)) and that makes trading for luxuries even more expensive. It's usually easier just to beat it out of the AI...

yeah, I try and trade for as many luxuries I can get, keep the citizens happy and all so I never have to worry about riots.

I always try and grab/take as much land as possible so I usually end up with at least 4 different lux resources. This is usually enough for me which is good because I refuse to pay the outrageous prices the AI demands for any resource. If I don't have enough lux for any reason, I will target a nearby civ that does and take it anyway. I sell my spare resources as soon as possible though. Great way to increase my revenue.:egypt:

I usually go and get them by conquest. The AI asks outrageous payments for luxuries once you have over 4 of them.

I never trade for over 4 luxuries, and if I really need them I just try to win them in war.

I find it better to reduce unhapiness with buildings and wonders

Can you please elaborate? IF you have them luxuries are the cheapest way, plus with marketplaces they give a happiness boost!

I never trade for luxuries.:( Everytime, I want to trade, the AIs are always asking my arms and legs.:( It always seem to go like this: They want two of my luxuries, 100+ gold per turn, and one of my best tech for one of their luxury. That's the most unfair deal ever! So, I just rush build 4 of my best transport and load them in full of my best troops plus a lot of defenders and just simply take away their city with luxury, immediately dig a moat to hold it at all cost, and hope that they are willing to a peace treaty 15 or 20 turns later.:) Work everytime!;)

PS: Just kidding about digging a moat. I can't dig a moat in Civ3; however, I can put up a citywall.;)

Building Great Wonder like the Bach's Cathedral or the Cure for Cancer, temple and catheral will only make unhappy citizens content. You don't get any happy face with buildings or wonders. Luxury resource and entertainer are the only two things that can add happy faces.:)

I make a point of getting all 8 luxuries as soon as possible. Whether i'm fighting a short, strategic war, or i've been duking it out for millennia, my citizens never riot. :)

I stay a Republic for a large part of the game (after using monarchy to set myself up) and am at war with one civ or another for the majority of the game, making a high number of lux/marketplaces essential.

Usually i find myself importing upwards to 4-5 luxuries, though i renogiate peace treaties when possible to curb the steep prices the AI likes to charge.

A bit off topic, I'll usually export one of my own luxuries in return for one of the AI's. Keeps the AI citizens happy and away from communism. While lessened in 1.21, the AI still will (somewhat) self-destruct under communism. Watching a civ who was the jewel of the world pop rush their cities from size 16 to size 4 and 5 is frustrating.

Besides boosting your score if your cities are happy enough they go into WLTLD (We Love The Leader Day....I think that is the accronym). WLTLD increases your city production I beleive and might have other benefits.

Yup, I got that WLTLD most of the time.:) I'm always switching to a Democratic civ as soon as possible and I'm at war all the time, but my citizens never riot. Let me put it this way: they have to be happy or I will cut off their food supplies and they will die out of starvation. That's ok...after I win the war, they can start giving birth again.;)
