Besides alleviating unhappiness in your cities, what all benefits does this slider have? I realize now after my second Warlord game that it may be having an outcome on my games. Any help?

In my experience, it only affects happiness. But note that happiness afects growth, productivity, etc. -- the need for entertainers reduces possible growth, and WLTKD reduces waste (which means more production). I use the luxury slider to (1) in times of peace, ensure WLTKD on the outskirts of my empire so I can build courthouses, marketplaces, etc., and (2) in times of war, to reduce the number of entertainers needed to keep my cities productive. (On the higher levels, a luxury slider at 10% or 20% is often needed in the early game just to keep size 3 or 4 cities from needing an entertainer).

EDIT: added ending parenthetical.

The luxury slider sets the amount of money (in percent ) used on luxuries (partys, feasts etc. ) even though YOU can't see the partys, these affect the amount of unhappines and happiness.
As you propabla have noticed, moving the slider affects also the income of your civilisation: moving it to the right tends to lower your income, and moving it to the left usually does the opposite... :) This can be a good way of countering war weariness or general unhappiness if you aren't able of controlling the growth of your cities. Remember, this feature should be used only if you are familiar with the income/outcome controlling and DO understand how to use it.

Increasing the number of happy citizens also has another benefit - it increases your overall score - so it is often worth doing later in the game if you can afford it to give your final score a boost.

It is also useful as mentioned earlier to control war weariness and general unhappiness - but if you have access to a lot of luxury resources either directly or via trade then it is probably best to keep the luxury slider as low as possible to build up your gold reserves.

You have a national income.
The sliders are there to decide how you will spend it.
The more you spend on luxury and science, the less remains of your income to trade with other nations, to maintain your army and buildings, or to pay for anything in your cities that needs to be produced fast.
Therefore it is generally a good idea not to set the luxury slider higher than is needed to avoid employing a lot of entertainers.
Try to find other ways to keep your people happy: military garrisons, connections to or trade for luxury resources, improvements like temples and wonders like the Hanging Gardens.
If you play your cards right, you might eventually get by with a national luxury percentage of 0%.

It is much better to increase lux slider to 10-20 % then making entertainer, making entertainer slow down growth and production.

It is much better to get luxuries then to increase lux slider.

It is much better to built temple and cathedral if you need to put lux slider at 20 % to avoid rioting, once those building are done , reduce lux slider. Maintenance for those building cost less then 10 % lux slider.

So i would say lux slider is a temporary solution to

1.- avoid rioting
2.- avoid the need of entertainer.

But you need to connect or buy luxuries and or built temple and cathedral, then no more taxe waste on luxe.

It is possible to get a size 12 city on regent and beeing a republic without any luxuri taxe. all to science.
