Mac editor problems?

Hi there

I just installed the mac editor, and it was no problem tweaking some units and city building as I found appropriet. However, once I started the game I noticed that there were som errors. Some of the words in different fields had been replaced with other word or phrases. For example, instead of displaying what year it is in the lower right corner, it says "will last until war is redeclared" (or something similar). This phrase appears whenever there is supposed to stand "BC". The same goes for turns. The word "turns" as found in the diplay how many turns it takes to research one technology, is replaced with the word "Cancel". These are only two examples, there are many more.

It is not such a big problem actually, as I have played the game before it isnt hard to figure out what it should say instead. However, I wonder if this is a usual problem, and if so, how can I fix it?

Thankful for help

Hi, welcome to CFC. :wavey:

I don't know much about the editor, but I think the text you are describing is supposed to come from the labels.txt file. I don't expect you have modified that file, so the only thing I can guess is that maybe you have modified another text file and used the wrong line endings. This may confuse the Civ3 software enough to produce the effects you have seen, but not enough to crash it.

The standard Mac OS X TextEdit puts Mac line endings into edited text. You need to use an editor like BBEdit or XCode, or the modified TextEdit in my signature, where you can specify the line endings to be DOS (CR/LF) instead of MacOS X/UNIX (LF) or classic Mac OS (CR).

What does "modified another text file" refer to?
What I wanted to do was emulate the "the balancer" mod, as I did not get it to work. I did not add any new units, governments or other things, only edited the properties of existing once. Most notable changed the pyramind to only give culture, and replaced when some resources are aviable to make it easier to trade them. And made all unit upgradable, and other small stuff like that. I havent put any text anywhere, only editet some numbers and changed some checkboxes...

Very thankful for any advice =)

Hmm. You'd only modify a text file - eg pediaIcons.txt - if you added new units or buildings, so if you haven't edited a text file that blows my first guess out of the window.

There must be some other change you've done in the editor that has confused the software, and I'm outside my sphere of knowledge. Have you checked in the Creation and Customization forum? If you want to upload your BIC file here I'll have a quick look at it to see if I can spot any file format errors created by the editor.

Here is the .bic file:

Sorry, the name isnt right on the .zip file, had to mess around a while to get it to work with uploading.

I've had a look at the BIC and it looks OK. I've started a game using it as a scenario, and I can't see any strange text. Attached is a screenshot showing the F6 screen where the turns to research a tech are displayed, and it also shows the current date in BC correctly.

Maybe the problem is nothing to do with your edits?

Here's a full size version of the screenshot below.
