Is there any downloads or anything for Mac Civ 3 users? I know we don't have Conquests or Play the World, but is there anything? Does that DOP thing work? Help, I am getting bored.
Quite frankly, we're not missing anything by not having PTW and C3C. They are imbalanced, such as lethal land bombard for bombers. Civ3 is a better game independent of the expansions, in spite of having less civs, wonders, and units (that you never need to build). Dyp is interesting, but I've never played a complete game.
During spells of boredom, play another game. I recommend EU2, HOI, and/or Victoria. I think I've finally passed through the mania of Civ3. Oh well, its still a fun game.
EU2 = Europa Universalis II
HOI = Hearts of Iron
Victoria = Victoria
ALl three are wonderfully engaging and super-detailed historical strategy games, available from Virtual Programming (who make the Mac format of the games, though the original version is by Paradox Entertainment ).
EU2 runs from 1421-1819, HOI is a WW2 game, and Victoria is set in the 19th century. I'd suggest starting with EU2 first, to get the feel of Paradox's overall game architecture, as all three can seem monstrously complex to the uninitiated, particularly Victoria
I think like dojoboy, I have been suffering from the same 'lack of mania' for Civ3 for most of the past 9-12 months, but since the very recent discovery of the DYP (Double Your Pleasure) Mod for Civ3 my enthusiasm has been revived for Civ3 (see my sig. below for DYP links). Currently playing as Siam and thoroughly enjoying it.
Btw, there is a GOTM mod w/ scenario that allows one (Civ3 Mac or PC) to utilize all the bells and whistles from the Civ3 expansions. I've d/l'ed it, but haven't installed.
Hi dojoboy - I must've just got in ahead of you with the old EU2/HOI/Vicki sales pitch How's life on the VPLtd Forums, I haven't been there for a few weeks?

Well, PTW is more of an 'expansion' whereas the major rule modifications came with C3C. Some like them, some don't. I'm not convinced that the game balance is as good in C3C, but I haven't played it much. In terms of PTW, what I think you Maccies are really missing out on are some of the interface enhancements (stack movement tweaks etc). I generally play all my games on PTW nowadays (where possible).
@Vegasgustan
Re the GOTM installers: They basically add PTW-equivalent civilizations to vanilla civ. Take a look in this thread. You could then either play the GOTM games, or add the civs / units to scenarios (although I understand that mac scenarios are a bit limited).
OT: Just had the old 'Great Leader' walking on water issue occur, after my Elite Marines took a 1-tile island city... how does one retreieve him? I can't load him back onto the transport? Help!
Well, I never use it myself. But, you assign a tile (rally point) for however many cities you wish. When unit production is completed there, it automatically goes to the set tile (rally point). Sending reinforcements to the frontline is automated.
