I think it would really improve the diplomacy side of things if it were possible to declare to a civ that unless they made peace with X then war with them would be declared. I am particularly thinking of the situation where a civ declares war on a suzerain city state.

Following the German invasion of Poland Chamberlain (the UK PM) said the British ambassador to Berlin had handed a final note to the German government this morning saying unless it announced plans to withdraw from Poland by 11am, a state of war would exist between the two countries.

Mr Chamberlain continued: "I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received and consequently this country is at war with Germany."

If I remember there were options in Civ 5 to demand a civilization make peace with another but I don't remember if that pertained to city states.

Yes, often times I forget that one of my city states is being attacked in Civ 6. Sometimes there's a note on the side of the screen that I miss, and after it is gone, I really don't know which city state that the opposing civilization is attacking...

I would also like a way to defend a suzerain city state when its too far away or too deep in enemy territory to actually get the military over to defend.

In general I find the demands in diplomacy pretty toothless and pretty limiting. If I had it my way there would be more options, but also have direct consequences to demands, in the same way that it works now with demands to move troops from your borders.

For e.g. if someone is sending missionaries to your lands, you can demand that they stop. If they consent, the missionaries are removed automatically. If they refuse, war is declared with a special cassis belli for just that situation. Ditto for making peace with city states, stealing artifacts, or even making demands for money.
