You should keep the gold! If you're not playing OCC you can use food roots to get two other scientists (unless the game only lets 3 food in max. I'm quite sure that food roots don't wast root space in the reciving city). Also, you could get more trade in that city by perfecting the comp's city to increase root trade. You might be able to get 50-100 bekers more that way. I noticed that you were allied with your twin city. Does that increase root trade?

I was talking about an OCC game; I think Tim was OCCing as well, but not sure. An alliance with the civ that is the destination of the SSC's trade routes is wise because the RD/RR bonus can be blocked by any non-allied units on the link.
