There is no doubt that the launch of Civilization IV is one of the biggest video game launches in recent memory. It is by far the #1 ordered and anticipated game of the year. Having said that it seems no one, including 2k themselves, expected such a big demand. This is understandable seeing that AOE III and COD2 being released almost simultaneoulsy got much more hype in the media than CIV IV. (I bet microsoft wishes that they would have released AOE III a week or 2 later at the very least.) So 2k games decided to come out with the pre-order edition and that made everyone go crazy ordering it even more.

Because of this places like amazon could not fill the demand for all their pre order editions of Civ IV. It is still up in the air whether EB Games and other outlets will be able to fill their orders for the pre-order edition. Hopefully EB is not putting us on until the very last moment.

In the end it really makes no sense to buy the stripped down version. And some of us who pre-ordered will be at the mercy of when the backorders will come in. I personally will wait a week if needs be or two (very anxiously and somewhat upset) for my pre-order edition.

Happy waiting Civers!!

Is there a special edition version? How does the pre order version differ?

there is a collector's edition. Costs $49.95 at my local EB Games. I bet it's the same as the pre-order edition.

The special "pre-order edition" has a different box, a "collector's case", CD soundtrack, keyboard foldout, tech tree map, spiral bound manual (as opposed to glue-bound), "disc holder" which I'm not sure what it is, "and more". It costs the same as the normal version, but was technically only available through pre-order. I'm not too sure how it would be possible to get it now that the game has been released, though... maybe try your luck at some stores the earliest you can?

I love Civ, but I doubt this. Any proof?
