People of our nation,

It pains me to say this, but I must resign my post as Secretary of War effective immediately. I must also ask that I be restricted from the Group listing that allows me to vote in polls, which I will be requesting of our moderators once I have finished this post.

Unfortunately, in my late-night stupor Friday night to gain game details by which I could properly address our nation, I accidentally clicked on the World Builder icon. What happened next was once of those "slow motion" responses that leaves one staring helplessly at the inevitable consequence unfolding before him, while not being able to take the correct action to stop it.

Because of this snafu, I now know where our location on this world is and also know the starting locations of all of our enemies. I have near heritical knowledge of what our future expansion plans should be, and should be considered a danger to those who would prefer to have a wholesome DemoGame experience. By this one false stroke of the key, I have already ruined the game for myself and do not wish to do the same for others.

I realize that the controversy of yet another fallen Triumvirate member is the last thing our nation needs, but I feel that my resignation is a far better solution than having me stick around under false pretenses. I know too much.

The good news is that at least our DPs will still get to use the AutoLog feature. I knew there was a reason that opposed that silly rule of convenience, but didn't think I would be the one to personally pay for it. I'll still take all the blame, due to my taking on more than I could schedule for myself....yet again.

I now put myself at the mercy of our moderators and bid you all farewell for the next few months. If there is any way I can assist in this game in a non-strategic fashion, I would like to be allowed to do so. I now have time to post non-heretical screenshots for everyone, since that seems to be a top request for the moment.

Let's see how this one plays out..........

Respectfully,

Donovan Zoi

PS The one silver lining: Now I should have some time for the Cage Match!

Oh no! Donovan thats so sad! I had grown attached to you as a leader! Please do stick around, and help with the upkeep of information and screenies and such! We do seem to be in desperate need of such work. I wish things were different =[ Looks like Greekguy has control of the triumverate whice is now the Unoumverate after all these problems =| Anyway, I trust greekguy and his sincerity

sad to see someone bow out so soon that didn't voluntarily bring it on himself.

I am very sorry to hear this DZ. I was looking foward to working with you for the rest of the term, and seeing you lead our people throughout the DG. How far into the future did you see? Is it possible you could come back a few months from now, when we catch up to the time you saw everything? Once again I'm sorry to have to see you leave the tri. This is really going to be a busy next 11 days for me. :(

Wow, this is quite unfortunate. There was a remedy if you had thought of it fast enough, just power off the monitor followed by ctrl-alt-del twice. :(

I for one would be willing to trust you to withhold information like that, if you can trust yourself to forget it. The prohibition is not on accidentally acquiring knowledge -- it is on using that knowledge to gain an advantage. By admitting the mistake, you've already shown yourself to be honorable.

There is no reason you have to be restricted from voting. Just abstain from the polls which would benefit from map knowledge, and go ahead and vote on elections and things which map knowledge wouldn't give an unfair advantage. It would be far worse for someone to play ahead and know what to build or whom to attack.

This is just the reason why I wanted the "no cheat" option on. Less mistakes...

EDIT: I've removed your membergroup access as requested.

If you guys are not too far into the game, it may be a good idea to restart the game, this time with that No Cheat option enabled.

The keyboard shortcuts CTRL+W for World Builder and CTRL+S for save game are so closed to each other and accidents can happen quite easily.

mumbles words you can't say on the forum

Well, we're only 10 turns in, so it's not like a lot of game play is invested.

If it had been a week ago we could have placed this before the citizens as a "fix the CoL, start a new game" option. Now we don't have enough time to start at the beginning of a new month, if the citizens did want to restart. Of course there is nothing in the rules which says we must start at the beginning of a month...

Autolog is still a really important factor. For those who have read Harry Potter, keeping a detailed turn log when you have too little system memory is a lot like writing lines with Umbridge's pen. You have to use pen & paper, another computer, or endure 10-15 seconds of task switching each time you want to write something down. It's really painful, to say the least. I for one already dropped $150 on a graphics card, a new system unit (mine is maxed on RAM) doesn't seem an option...

I can still finish off the DemoGame mod which includes most of the HoF mod stuff, use that with no cheat turned on, and as long as we don't have someone with a FAT32 filesystem who wants to load the save it will do what we need. If/when there is another patch ;) there is a good chance that the FAT32 issue will be fixed anyway, so really it's a question if the citizens want to accept using a mod through the advanced screen.

I suppose the autolog aficianados might be able to endure the pain if we decided to abandon the idea of using it.

I don't want to do a restart nor do I think many others want to either. It's human error, and while it's avoidable, is it worth it? I said in the chat: [17:04:56] <Ginger_Ale> I would much rather make our lives ten times easier and increase risk one time more than having no risk nor benefit. The benefits of the current game far outweigh, at least to me, the risk associated with having No Cheat off. We just have to be careful with our actions when we might accidentally open the WorldBuilder - we're not perfect. We're humans. But we can do the best we can.

It would have been better if there is a confirmation popup before the World Builder is opened in Civ4 to prevent accidents like that. I suggested adding a confirmation popup to Firaxis... Hope they could add it in a future patch.

If you guys don't want to restart, all I can say is be more careful. :)

I certainly do not want to have everyone restart after all we have been through to this point. I agree that everyone needs to be more careful.

i dont believe we should restart, it is a sad turn of events however the demogame is bigger than one person, we just need to be more careful in future.

this is definitley a horrible turn of events for the first CIV 4 DG. Our triumvirate has become a univirate.

I say we just restart with no cheat on... it's not like we've gone very far. Also, I don't like the idea of these "closed" sessions with no cheat off. Either we have it on and allow closed sessions, or we turn it on and don't allow them.

Why the hell did we leave no cheat on? Scared to be alittle bit challanged?

Restart, were not that far.. and there's no need to be selfish and not let someone else play because of a simple mistake. A mistake that was made by the whole, and not the individual. The populace were the ones who screwed up, and as such the populace should take the punishment.

How is having No Cheat off 'challenging'? It's no different than having it on - either way, we won't cheat. It just makes life easier for us. We can carry a bit of responsibility that we will do our best to avoid cheating intentionally or not.

Maybe we should make a rule while we're at it to not allow Daveshack to start games for us? It's unlucky!
