Automated workers have a lousy habit of moving to an unroaded square to work it on one turn and then moving off the square on the next turn because there is now higher priority work elsewhere. I have watched an auto-worker move off of an improved sqauare simply to have another worker move back onto the SAME square in the same turn!! I have even seen this continue for 5 - 10 turns for the same square (and multiple workers)! The effect is that there are two turns with no action or productivity for that worker.
I keep an eye out for this situation when I do automate and I will intervene to have the worker build a road (or an improvement and then the road). A road allows other workers to move to/off the square without penalty. I know that the square is a priority and that if I do nothing another worker would be there soon anyway.
My 2 cents.
