This isn't a bug exactly, just an oversight, so I wasn't sure where to post this.

One turn 1 with Maori you are at sea and making +2 science and culture a turn. At this point you CAN choose a science and start earning those +2 beakers a turn towards it. However, the game does not have a turn 1, end turn safety check to make sure you have a science assigned.

Its annoying when you sail around for 5 turns, settle a city, then realized you are 10 science short immediately. It's not a bug because you can remember to select a science without being reminded by the game, but I feel like the devs just forgot to put this safety in their for the Maori who have a different early game experience compared to the rest.

How do you know, when at sea, which tech will best benefit you? You can save science up so you can apply it to your first tech once you know the land around your new city.

The only early tech where I can see a colorable argument that you might want, as Maori, to research a specific tech while at sea is Animal Husbandry (to see horses at your settlement site). That is a pretty remote benefit, frankly, since it would require that you stay at sea for 12 turns before you start seeing horses. That's far longer than you should take before settling.
