Description: This map is based on the world of Pern, in Anne McCaffrey's Dragonrider series. The map from the time of the 7th Pass (F'lar and Lessa's time) is used, before the discovery of AIVAS. The Weyrs are starting positions. Holds are represented by minor civ villages.

Resources have been distributed according to information found in "The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern" 2nd edition, Jody Lynn Nye and Anne McCaffrey. For example, around Fort Weyr you will find more iron and metals, around Benden you will find wine... I think I set too many resources throughout the map, however. Feel free to send me suggestions and corrections, it has been several years since I read the series and my memory of what hold/weyr/crafthall makes what is a bit rusty.

This is my first Civilization map, and I don't care much for the Editor that came with game. I have only just discovered your site, and have not looked at all the mods. Is there a way for me to customize the names of these tribes, to rename them after the Weyrs and other Pernese geographical features? Please send me info.

Thanks, Derek

I just had this series suggested to me, so now having this map makes me even more compelled to read the books. :)

As for renaming the tribes to match the weyrs and such, click on scenario and allow custum rules. Then click on the edit tab for civilizations. There you can rename the civs, cities, leaders, etc. to match up. Hope this was helpful.

Now if someone could figure out a way to create the Threads for a scenario...

Thanks CamJH for the advice, I've been working on customizing the Civilizations to fit the personalities in the books. Naturally, if I ever finish that up I'll post Pern V1.1 here :)

Gday!

I always thought Pern was the most well-constructed map of a fanatasy world (although that may be because it is also perhaps the most similar to the Earth itself!). Either way, this looks damn cool!!

Don't know how Threads could be incorporated, but any effort would add an excellent twist.

Cheers, and thank you!

Greetings all. Back last summer, I had intended to get some settings into this map to reflect the characters in the books. Unfortunately I didn't get that project off the ground. Since then, I've lost my original map so I had to wander back here to download it again! Thank you Civ Fanatics Center Boards!

Anyway, here's a bump for the Pern map. Enjoy!

I love the map. It's great, and better than what I could do.

However, I do have some accuracy complaints. The northern continent is far, far too small. I recongnize that you did have a limited working space, but you only show a small ammount of it. I'm guessing that you worked from the books, and as such, only saw a small amount of it. Also, a few bits of the northern continent are completely out there. Overall, the Northern continent was good.

The southern continent, however, is kinda messed up. Ierne Island is too far out, and Dorado(the area next to it) is too far in. The Penisula on Dorado needs to come out more. The Delta are comes out too steeply. The hooked area on it, however, is spot on. Macedonia is okay, but the area needs more, as does much of the Southern Continent. Cathay and Araby have almost no land. That needs to be fixed. The Hook on Kahrain is out kinda akwardly. Jordan and the Landing need to come out more. Also, the islands you potrayed are in the wrong location. They need to come off of Jordan/Landing and extend up. The Sea of Azov also needs to be portrayed.

As to making it a scenario, this needs to be done: First, the Forts and Weyrs need to be in a fixed alliance. Somehow. I would say that the Weyr is the capital of all the Forts that it protects, or there is only one country. The only military units to be built could be built by the Weyr(dragons). You would have to seriously alter the things that could be built, such as no temples or Cathedrals(Pernese were aetheists), no banks, no airports, all sorts of stuff.

I would also have an "improvement" for one country(the southern contininent) for whatever you have hold AIVAS. AIVAS, I would believe, would be like a souped-up Great Library-He'd take you all the way to modern era, whatever you'd have for that.

You'd also only want a few eras-Maybe only two, with insane research costs for the first? AIVAS would likely also serve to reduce research costs big time.

Also, I would like to think their would only be one goal: Space Victory. I would give the spaceship components different names, such as space suits, bombs, and a few others, make them take a few months to build, and likely some more that I can't think of.

Actually, I think the one govt. would be best. You will have to do something to simulate thread, but I can't think. Um...Yeah, I dunno who'd spend their time doing all that, but yeah...

Map is awesome though. I couldn't do that if my life depended on it.

Edit: The improvent for the southern cont. country would have to be something that generates no income/benefit/ect. whatsoever.

It's over two years since I made the first map, and I never made improvements on it. I apologize for that.

Just bumping the thread, as I started reading the books again and wondered if the map was still here. Thanks to CivFanatics for hosting it all this time.
