In celebration of the now happening Euro 2016, I'd like to propose a map for GOTM or whatever starting during the football competition. The attached map is not of the right scale & unskillfully made by me just for you to take the gist:
- Please remember to make it toroidal! And symmetry!
- As you can see there are shapes that look like 4 letter "H" on the map. Each vertical stroke is meant to be the battleground for 1/16 matches, for there are 2 teams (civs) starting at the ends of each stroke.
- The horizontal strokes are intended for the teams to explore and fight each others at the quarterfinals. The mountains are there to block early access and DOWs.
- Now each vertical stroke has some "bulges" near the center. They are supposed to be cultural harbors for boats to reach another "H" for the semifinals. Please make the distance between the bulges on the left side of that top left "H" and those on the right side of the top right "H" exactly 3 tiles - as I said, the experimental map is not to scale. And that's another reason to make it toroidal.
- The top 2 "H"s and the bottom 2 are meant to be separated by vast ocean - it's for the finalists! Only accessible by caravels at least!
- Please feel free to adjust the map whatever way you mapmakers see fit - change shape, change size... even rotating those "H"s is also an option.
- In my mind, the spaces for each starting team will be so small they can barely breath. Maybe 3 cities before fighting is a must for expansion? Once annihilated the 1/16 opponents they will have about 6 cities - still very cramped. So they have to continue DOWing on the quarterfinal players. After that win, 12 cities and still feel the need for more (to boost the chance of fighting in semifinals, I'll choose the Aggressive AIs option. And Random leader personalities also - you don't know what strategy the other coaches have in hands!). And when there's only 2 teams left, there's no hurry, each one can choose to develop his 24 cities line-up before the grand final battle!
- I'm not decided whether this map will follow a strict rule of balanced resources and identical starting positions, or just let the random machine rolls. Once again it's up to the mapmakers if they choose to follow this map plan.
So what do you think? We can create the map beforehand and wait for the last 16 teams of Euro to surface - then let thebloodbath match begin! Though I have a high anticipation that I'll get to shoot some Asian commies or kick some American asses... before becoming the king of Europe!
