Anyone hear anything about it? @k Elizabeth told me maps would be larger. But In some pictures the maps are small while in others they are large. There was also a preview saying they were small. I don't know who to believe

from the minimaps in different screenshots I have seen small maps all the may up to truly large maps

There are 6 map sizes, from Duel to Huge.

Some of the screenshots you may be referring to are (if they are the ones I'm thinking of) from the very first handful of turns in the game, where the mini map is pretty much centered on your city and very zoomed in. I assumed the more of the map you reveal the more zoomed out the mini-map becomes. I think it tries to keep all explored territory filling as much of the mini-map view as possible.

nah we have seen the full size range on the fully discovered minimap.

Ill show you.

Medium
Spoiler :
That's a fairly decent size Pangea, maybe standard size. And as you can see, its not really early in the game its 620 AD

I still think the mini-map scales based on what you've uncovered, is where I think some of the confusion is coming from.

It is a different scale depending which map size you choose at the beginning of the game. The mini-map has never changed sizes during a game though, and I doubt it will in V. You always know from the beginning where you are on the map and how far you can explore. Maybe another change that can be made in the next version.

Unless I am completely misunderstanding your intent here, this seems like an untrue statement. The Mini map has ALWAYS changed size in previous civs, putting you (the player) in the middle, and as you explore more, the camera pans out to show you more of the world and where you are in relation to it. I mean, start a huge (or any size for that matter) game in IV, explore a little bit and start building stonehenge in your capital. Until Stonehenge is complete, you have no idea where you are in relation to other landmasses, In fact you may think you are in an ideal spot, only to find out you are stuck in the CIV equivalent of Greenland . . .

I think you miss the point. In the early game of civ 4, before you discover calendar or build stone henge your minimap was only as big as the world you knew existed, a.k.a. what you've explored. Then, once you got calendar it went full size and you could see how little you had actually explored.

And everyone was worried about having a small number of cities.

There might be unhappiness but what else can you do in the huge maps? Leave about 100 tiles neutral because you want to keep your 3 puny cities? Im pretty sure we will all be able to have as many cities as we choose :D

It does in 4. Until you discover a tech or build a wonder that "centers the world map," the mini-map scales to what you've discovered.

Yes but I included a late game small mini map, by 620AD you will have explored the oceans and that is obviously a pangea anyway and I've certainly shown the size differences and not just differences in mini map scale.

Also by 620ad you will have discovered calendar which will still probably fully extend the minimap to full scale.

I don't know about Civilization 1 and 2, but the mini map never changed size in Civilization 3. In Civilization 3, you knew your position on the map right away. In Civilization 4, the mini map just kept on expanding until you either discovered calendar, or you managed to get the whole map revealed before hand.

Those maps are big!

I just hope that there is a super slow game speed to go with them...
