Hi,

How do markets, banks etc. (+% commerce) work when you have 100% science (and thus, no commerce produced by city)?

Regards,

Yeah, I think they do nothing, unless you have a source of pure commerce. Shrines are the only example I can think of.

I not really sure but in the last game i was playing I had science at 80% and my culture bar at 20% so there was no commerce. my main source of income was from my shrines. anyway I was making about 170 gold per turn so I think your improvments do have effect even if no commerce is being generated by that city.

What does the game mean by "markets create 25% extra commerce?"

Does the commerce equal to raw money made? Or actual 'income' from the city?

AFAIK, unless they changed it somehow for some reason in civ4, the 'commerce' equals the net income in gold of your city's worked squares. In civ1 and civ2, the commerce icon were two trade arrows, thus the concept of 'commerce'. Imagine that the gold you see on the squares comes from the taxed 'commerce' taking places there.

One thing I find strange, is no longer to have a tax slider/setting. It felt a bit more right, than just shoveling all the gold produced in the emperor's coffers. Plus it revealed the relation between income and science in a convenient way. I also loved being able to reward the people with more "luxury".

So, to answer the question, banks and markets will function all the way, they're not dependant on how much of your income you spend on science or culture.

Actually, with 1.52 they changed the image for commerce/wealth so it is more clear what is what.

I think that market, bank etc. increase wealth (image of stacked coins) and not commerce (image of one coin, as generated by workers on terrain). Commerce gets split up to culture/science/wealth according to sliders.

So I would logically assume that markets, banks etc. have no effect if you are running with 0% wealth. Have to test it though.

It probably has an effect on the trade routes and the cash from specialists. But so far as the commerce from squares concerns: No effect.
EDIT: You should slide the cursor over the commerce slide area in a city and see for your self, there will be a popup showing the calculations of wealth/commerce.

If having 100% science these improvements does add anything.

Well that's why Markets and Groceres have secondary health and happies benefits and Bank gives 50% bonus.
