I have been working with marsh graphics recently and have a question. I have noticed that several versions of the marsh terrain include some swampy trees at the bottom of the file (See attached image below). How are the trees in the bottom of the marsh file used? Is there a way to get them into a scenario, or are they just another artifact left behind from a dropped feature of the game?

I apologize if the image is too fuzzy, I didn't want to waste any downloading time for those checking this thread.

Those are Pines and you can place them using the Editor with your Map, same as your would select other Terrains and place them :)

But how do you place them? They don't override the pine forests in the grassland forest.pcx file, I checked. And there isn't a separate marsh-pine-forest option in the terrain selection box. They also don't show up when a pine forest is next to a swamp, or when a river passes through a pine forest.

No. The pine forest is located in the forest files, not the marsh one.

The marsh file also has the same "Pine Forest" section as the grasslandforest terrain file but may not work.

Depending on what you have configured for your Terrain, you can place those Pine Marshes in the 3rd and 4th row down from the Top of the Marsh File which is the Jungle Small area. Then place a marsh over or next to Trees or Forest Terrain on your map to have those images show. Depends of your terrain arrangement.

IF you are unsure about what area of the marsh file to paste those Pine marsh images into, Back Up your marsh file then Draw a Wide Colored Line through each Section of images on that marsh File using the Colors from its palette.
Make each section a different color so you will see the difference. Then open the editor and your map and place marshes around your map over various terrains. You will then know where to place those images on the marsh file.

Ok, if I understand what you are saying correctly, the marsh-pine images at the bottom are optional, and can be used to replace those images in the second 2 rows of the marsh file (which correspond to the Jungle-small lines in the forest file). Is that correct?

I used the method you suggested to figure out where each tile is used. It seems that the top 2 rows are for marsh tiles completely surrounded by other marsh tiles, while the second 2 rows are for edges. Thus, if i replace the second 2 rows with the pines, then the edges of the marshes will look like these forests, but they're still marshes.

I think the best option is going to be to try them as Landmark Forests, because they definitely look more like forests than marshes.

Yes.

There you go... yes, first find out what terrains you use and the positions of the marsh files so you can adjust the file where you get what you want in your game.

Leaven... Yes, LMForests would give you more control than how the game would place the images from the marsh terrain against other terrains. The main drawback is that if the LMForest is used it will not state marshes in game but Glad you were able to get what you want :)
