The multiplication x isn't taught in Germany at all, people probably wouldn't even know it if it wasn't for the dominance of TI calculators. You'll use the dot symbol (\times in TeX) from the beginning.
We were taught in the US to use 'x' for multiplication until Algebra, after which we were told to use '*' (or the dot in the center, to be specific). And then you have 'x' to represent cross product, which is an entirely different can of worms.
