Matrix1 - Ziggurat Addiction

Actually, due to my math homework, I could conceivably create a function that maps lumber production to hours worked and amount of people working, take a gradient, find the place where all directional derivatives are zero... and find the forest cutting manner of maximum efficiency.

This mathematically proves that mathematics making forest chops more valuable is actually historically accurate and not just some random effect they decided to add to this tech!

[no actaually useful stuff to add anymore...]

This mathematically proves that mathematics making forest chops more valuable is actually historically accurate and not just some random effect they decided to add to this tech!

[no actaually useful stuff to add anymore...]

However, I will say that none of the methods I was talking about were developed until 1700 at least...

So mathematics should be a MUCH later tech to make forest cutting more efficient.

By 300BC, Greeks had brought up questions and answer trails about analytic geometry that were pretty darn close to 1700's calculus - they just lacked the formal symbolic language and technicalities that came up with the Bernoullis, Newton and Leibniz. Their maths were really cool, and they didn't even write equations.

As for suggestions: brace for forges, spread hindu, make more vultures and catapults and maybe a pair of spears. Qin is going down.

Well, this was rather boring, to be honest. Let's get to the report, shall we?

FIRSTLY, here's the autolog, for your convenience:

That's that. Now, for the turn report:

TURN 0

Before the turn ends, I switch Uruk and Eridu from wonders (seriously, we don't need the Shwedagon) to two Hindu Missionaries. It turns out that we have two cities that don't have Hinduism. I aim to fix that.

TURN 1

Pink Dot Kish builds a catapult. Good for you. I start another catapult.

TURN 2

Metal Boats Nibru grows, and at the same time nets (get it?) a second fish resource. Woohoo!

Qin builds for us a very large building with mirrors and torches and the like on top. Apparently, it's bigger than other similar buildings.

Civ4ScreenShot0008-2.jpg

Donuts.

I increase the espionage on Boudica (we want Theo, don't we?) to weight 1 and send a newly-built spy there. Why? Because I can.

Oh, and we steal Currency!!

Civ4ScreenShot0009-1.jpg

:woohoo:

TURN 3

Meh

TURN 4

Amazing Eridu builds a missionary. Nice. I start a Vulture.

TURN 5

Uruk builds a missionary and starts a Vulture. Hell, why not.

Metal Boats Nibru starts feeling the Hindu buzz. Only one city (PDK) needs Hinduism now.

Oh yeah, and...

WE GET METAL CASTING!!

Civ4ScreenShot0010-1.jpg

:woohoo: :king:

That's two more techs!

TURN 6

Pink Dot Kish finishes a catapult and builds a SPEARMAN. I heard a request for spears...

Also, Hinduism FAILS to spread to Pink Dot! Whatever shall I do...

TURN 7

Meh

TURN 8

I'll tell you what I shall do. Uruk finishes a vulture this turn, so I build ANOTHER missionary. Nothing will stop my religion spread!!

Also, Amazing Eridu finishes a vulture and starts a spearman.

TURN 9

The water supply of Uruk is poisoned! This causes me to be sad in the worst way... Who DARES to use SPIES against US?

Pink Dot Kish finishes a spear and starts yet another catapult.

Happy Camp Ur finishes a lighthouse. I don't know what to build, so I start a barracks.

Civ4ScreenShot0011.jpg

Take a look at this espionage screen... all I can say is "What the hell, Frederick?" At least it tells us who dared to poison our water supply. FREDERICK!!

TURN 10

A Great Spy is born in Uruk:

Civ4ScreenShot0012.jpg

I don't know what to do with him, so I just press spacebar.

Bad news... BOUDICA DECLARED WAR ON WASHINGTON... this could upset the balance of power...

Not much else happened.

Here's a few postgame screens:

Personally, I think we should beeline Engineering and put up some castles. I'd also warn AGAINST war with Qin. If you look, he's four turns away from Feudalism, which means, so are we. This means he'll get LONGBOWMEN soon. Do we really want to fight longbows?

Just remember...

Longbow is long.

... or the discussion

I say start the war against Qin early, play it defensively, let him waste troops on us and slow his teching down. That would slow him down, wouldn't it? I don't honestly know, but it would slow AI's down in civ3...

Anyways, we'll need to expand.

You mean the part of the discussion where you specifically said to spread Hinduism? That part of the discussion?

However, I will admit to making a mistake in adding weight to Boudica. But you can't yell at me for building missionaries when you told me to spread Hinduism.

Yes, we do.

Settle the spy in Uruk. Settled spy + Scotland yard = :D Settle settle settle.

If we're scared of longbows, then let's at least war on Fredrick and take Agra. We've let him hold onto that city long enough.

Even if it wasn't the rules...

Settle all Great Spies in the capital, except for one for Scotland Yard.
I'd still settle him in the cap.

We cannot beeline any tech, since we have to steal them all!

Things we can do:

1. If we see someone research engeneering, focus EP on him, get 3-5 spies over to a city of his to buildup the 50% discount and steal it the turn he gets it

2. If we have a vassal (preferably one who techs well) we can ORDER him what to research.

About warring longbows: Well, we're almost never gonna have superior units, so we'll just have to mass MORE units (especially siege). I think trebs + cleanup (swords/maces) will do a reasonable job. Another reason for engeneering.

Fred's Agra city is a nice place to steal his techs from.

Got it. If not tomorrow, I'll play on wednesday. If I don't get around to posting a PPP today, I'll probably do it tomorrow, which depending on haste of response, will finalize whether I play tomorrow or wednesday.

PPP:

I'll go by city.

Happy Camp Ur: This is a bit of a long-term plan here. I'll MM the city as so:
Civ4ScreenShot0178.jpg

Letting it slowly grow on the coastal tiles until 6pop, at which point it will be forced to take a spy spec, then we'll stagnate on that.

Marbalous Lake: As so:
Civ4ScreenShot0179.jpg

The worker still comes in in 1t. After that, the city slowly grows back onto the 4h tile and stagnation. Start on wealth after the worker comes in.

Amazing Eridu: Keep the tile usage as is. I can't really see the city growing until we have irrigation, leading from Ur's farm up to the corn. Build spies after the current spearman finishes.

Drunk Lagash: Leave as is. After worker, start on wealth. Growth to 6pop and thus spy spec 1t after worker finishes.

Metal Boats Nibru: Leave as is. Let the Lighthouse finish. When it does, switch the 1f1h tile and the 2h tile to the cottage and a coastal tile. Spy spec at 6pop. Build wealth.

Pink Dot Kish: Definitely not growing until irrigation. Leave as is. Let catapult finish. Spies afterwards.

Gift From The Gods: Leave as is. Let the city grow onto the second elephant. WB -> Granary -> Lighthouse. Net fish. There's a lot of water tiles in this city. I suggest putting Moai here.

Uruk: Settle GSpy. Aqueduct after the missionary comes in.

Non city things: Steal Feudalism from Qin in 3t. Spread Hindu to Kish with the missionary being built in Uruk.

I'll play 15 turns. Maybe a little more if I can steal a tech. Damned AIs aside from Qin are teching things we already have! It's kinda crazy that we actually have a tech lead on the AI.

Actually, it's not as crazy as you might think. I've heard that the spy gambit, if executed right, usually ends up like this. I'm just surprised that we gained a tech lead this early. I suppose it's from having so many nearby targets to steal from.

I'm surprised too. I thought Espionage Economy didn't really get going until you could get jails.

I still think we should take Agra. >.>

We probably shouldn't declare on anyone unless we're going to really bring the hammer down on them. Just one city is not prudent, methinks. Freddy would be, however, an easier target than Qin what with him not having Feudalism in 3t. Although, we don't have near enough troops to take him down right now.

Maybe we could give some techs away to ai's we want to befriend (until we :backstab: hehehe)?
This would both gain us diplo points, and makes it likely they'll go tech something for us to steal!

PPP sounds good, although I'd rather stagnate Happy Camp Ur @ size 5, working the marble and the horse instead of coast + spec @ size 6.

I guess we all want to go to war soonish, so let's focus on getting units!
Building units now, and upgrading them before the war normally is too expensive, but hey, if instead of storing too many spy points, we can buy an army, let's do it!

Hehe... I like the backstabbery plan.

I just finished the Civ V demo... was much fun! I have a sneaky suspicion that once my succession games are over, I will be done with Civ IV.

Turn 0:

MMed Ur as shown

MMed Marbalous as shown

Turn 1:

MMed Nibru to work its cottage

Turn 2:

Amazing Eridu: Spearman -> Spy

Turn 3:

Uruk: Missionary -> Aqueduct

Shaka DoWs Freddy

Washington has a stack:
Civ4ScreenShot0180.jpg

Dude is walking around with a large bat. I have a bat, too, but it's not as big, and his bat seems specially designed to break mine...

Turn 4:

Even though I never saw it again, Washington's stack scared me, so..

Pink Dot Kish: Catapult -> Spearman

Gift from the Gods: Workboat -> Lighthouse

Boudica builds the Parthenon

So, she's going to get more GPP. I wonder where she keeps all those points. Must be somewhere on her person, where I wouldn't be able to just stick my hand in and take them...

Turn 5:

Hindu spread to Pink Dot Kish

*Bumps into Qin*
Me: Oh, hello, Qin! Didn't see you there!
Qin: Yes, I'm sure you didn't.
Me: Ah, well, I'm kind of in a hurry. Got to start training Longbowmen!
Qin: How did you..
Me: Bye! *runs off; when around a corner, pulls Feudalism out of pocket and looks at it, snickering*

Turn 6:

Metal Boats Nibru: Lighthouse -> Wealth

Metal Boats Nibru and Drunk Lagash grew to 6. Assigned a spy spec in Nibru. AI auto-assigned a spy spec in Lagash. It apparently knows the variant rules now.

Turn 7:

Pink Dot Kish: Spearman -> Spy

So, we have troops near Agra. That thing's been a thorn in my side. Quite literally, splitting my empire in half like that. I wasn't going to take it today, but Shaka is waving his sword around menacingly in front of Freddy's face, so while he's distracted, yes.. *charges at Freddy with an axe*

Upgraded the warrior in Marbalous to a Vulture, fearing counterattack from Freddy in that area.

So my first act in this war was so devilishly devious! I had catapults on his side of our border before I started. Some workers of his were in the same spot. So I brought my catapults back on our side of the border, hit the big red button, and set the catapults in, capturing that worker for ourselves!

Too bad that we don't really have much for workers to do right now...

Turn 8:

Just positioning our forces outside of Agra.

Turn 9:

It's as if we read eachother's minds or something! Shaka and I. Wham! We smacked Freddy at exactly the same time! He hit Calcutta. From the looks of things, he burnt the city. I took Agra, turning that thorn in my side into a valuable asset. It was an amazing victory. He really had no chance. We had a spy sitting around in Agra, so I had him start a riot in the city - the guards were so busy dealing with that, they never knew what hit 'em! It wasn't that big of a riot, though. Agra's guards were able to take down one of our catapults, but that was it. Aside from that, we suffered no losses. We took the city swiftly and decisively!

As is our custom, I immediately ordered the construction of a Ziggurat in the city.

After this pincer strike, Freddy was on his ass. With the big black man that is Shaka Zulu and myself with my axe looming over him, he didn't dare resist when I picked his pockets for some cash before I left.
Civ4ScreenShot0181.jpg

Turn 10:

So, right after all of this, before he went back in to continue beating on Freddy, Shaka comes up to me - to me! - and asks for Feudalism.
Civ4ScreenShot0182.jpg

This man really knows his stuff. I just saw what he can do, and he knew it. I knew it too, and didn't want to be on the recieving end of that next, so I said, "Sure, buddy! You can have it!" and got out of there as fast as I could after giving it to him. Anyways, the rest of them are kind of backwards. Almost pitiable.

Amazing Eridu: Spy -> Swordsman

Turn 11:

So, Washington came up to me, seeing how I had smacked up Freddy earlier. He's all like, "Hey! Why dont you come help me take down Boudica!
Civ4ScreenShot0183.jpg

However, he wasn't carrying that big stick I saw him with earlier. So, I declined.

Pink Dot Kish: Spy -> Vulture

Qin completes the Mausoleum of Maussolos

I wonder who he buried.

Turn 12:

Huh? Oh. I didn't do anything this turn.

Turn 13:

Uruk: Aqueduct -> Longbowman

Boudica completes the Church of the Nativity

Too bad her religion is lame. Not like Hinduism!

So, earlier, I had noticed some rice on the far northern end of our borders, in Uruk Province. It was about this time that a farm was fully set up and connected to the road network. Since we now had some rice of our own, I politely ended that trade agreement wirh Washington where he was giving us rice for our fur.

Turn 14:

Amazing Eridu: Swordsman -> Longbowman

Pink Dot Kish: Vulture -> Longbowman

Just to let Shaka know that I'm still implicitly supporting his war, I went ahead and sent a man in to blow up Freddy's copper mine. He won't be bringing out any axes for a while.

Turn 15:

Of course, naturally, next thing I did was to sneak into Shaka's hut and take his Compass.

Overview:

Alright. Since we took Agra, Vijayanagara is the place to go to steal from Freddy. We have Spies in Freddy's north that need to go there.

Shaka will have Horseback Riding in a few turns. There is a spy in his closest city (Xochicalco or some crazy Nahuatl thing like that), the one north of Ainu.
