Im not 100% certain, but I think the hardware for Maxtor HDD's is made at the old Maxtor plants, but final assembly is all by Seagate. Hence, the firmware issues affected both Maxtor and Seagate.
The basic premises of the two product lines remain the same though, Maxtor offers storage capacity more than speed, while Seagate has a better balance of the two.
