Is it me being a dimwit, or has Civ III got a LOT harder since the last patch? Civs I've never even met are "annoyed" with me. The last two games I've played, I've ended up lagging badly behind in the technology race, and I have had all the CPU players declare war on me simultaneously. It's like the swines have a conspiracy against me, even to the point where they seem to research separate technologies in order to share them more efficiently.

I've tried knocking the difficulty down, even as far as Warlord. By 1350, I generally find I have 5 civs attacking me with cavalry, no wonders to my name, and I'm barely able to scrape together some musketmen.

Seriously, It's driving me nuts. I'm getting totally whupped on difficulty levels I used to sneer at. Surely I'm doing something badly wrong!

You probably are doing something wrong, or at least something different. But rest assured - the swine do have a conspiracy against you. They know when and where you are weak and they exploit that weakness.

But don't take it personally. Start again. Play on a small map and choose your opponents carefully. Pick ones you think you can beat. Be ruthless. Expand fast and build your military. Attack at your convenience. A few quick victories will do wonders for your confidence.

What is your reputation with the Civs that you have met ?

Could it be that the new civs were told of your treacheries and therefore don't like you either ?

just be nice to everyone, keep up miltary, with whatever you can at the time,so they don tthink youre as wek, and make alliances as soon as possible.

Impecable. As a rule, I never go to war in the first 2000 years - it's just too dicey.

I played another game last night as the Russians (Regent difficulty), and concentrated more on building armies, and fared much better. The Indians have already been squashed, and the Greeks are on their way out.

Seems that keeping up militarily is key to the way other Civs percieve you.

And another point, is that if you managed to get a great leader, then build an army with it. For some reason the other Civs will respect you alot sooner than normal, and will leave you alone for a very long time. Just trade with them quite regularly.

This happened to me in my current game - don't even have the largest army (3rd biggest).
