How exactly does lost lands work? It states that it increases food by 50%, increases production by 50%, adds 2 trade routes, and reduces trade route income by 50%. However, when I use it it doesn't state that there is a +50% production due to civics. It also doesn't seem to add hammers consistantly across the empire.

For example, in my capital, running lost lands and god king, it has 5 hammers coming from the tiles it is working. It then states that it has base 9 hammers. Then it adds the 50% from god king to get 13. In another city, there are 13 hammers from the tiles it is working. Then the city states that it is getting 15 hammers - I am not working any priests, engineers, or citizens either.

Food is a bit harder to calculate, but doesn't seem to be adding up right either. Trade routes are all producing 0 gold atm though, so that is definitely working...

It's not a flat +50% to food and hammers. Instead, it's all through trade routes. So you get less money from trade, but gain hammers and food.

(-50% :commerce:, +50% :hammers:, +50:food:) from Trade Routes.

exactly.

Look at your Trade routes when running Lost Lands, you will see the biggest changes there.

So, basically if you had 4 commerce from a trade route, you would now have 2 hammers, 2 food and 2 commerce?

Also do you count possible hammers from palace or city tile?

Can anyone tell me why or under which circumstances one should consider switching to Lost Lands? In my current game I tried it as soon as it was available, it killed my economy.
Now, later on and with a good number of cities I tried switching, but I get way less gold than from Foreign Trade. I guess Lost Lands could be nice if you don't have many civs and/or open borders.
But apart from that I see really no reason to adopt it. Well, could be that I didn't build enough cottages, instead trying to go for more swamps - which is tedious, due to the very low terrain conversion rate. But going for lots of cottages, or rather towns, sind Lost Lands doesn't work for the lower ones (should be changed imo) needs a whole lot of workers, due to the very bad work rate of the lizards...
Me playing Marathon could also be a reason for Lost Lands being so bad, since it takes ages to get towns.
