alright I've started a game as Egypt and have in preparation for the war agianst the Mongols decided to Blitzkrieg the Turks (with my cavalry/infantry ratio I have no better term)

however I'm still scared as hell at the thought of facing the Khan with only Egyptian units, how do I defeat these buggers?

Avoid them if at all possible, and I'm sure many a commander has made the very same statement after fighting the Mongols.

Perhaps the lightest cavalry you can train to chase down the Mongol horse archers. Or at least keep them on the run.

Pretty much the only time I've defeated the Mongol armies in the field is after I've bled their super-experianced, free upkeep horde armies white on my Cannon tower equipped cities.

Combatting their normal units is quite easy, seeing as they lack any form of decent infantry unit.

Here are a few tips how are killed off the Mongols 8 giant Armies in 100 years. I was playing the Turks,

1. Rule number one, NEVER let them capture a fort! If they capture a castle this means they can retrain and recruit and fight you in larger numbers, also they are freakin rich so they buy improvements without worrying. So if your neighbouring country loses a fort to the Mongols, capture it quick.

2. These monster armies impossible to kill when together, but when alone or in groups of two, rush them with your best units.

3. Pick off the leader, many battles I won agaisnt was because I picked off the General (usually by dumb luck) quickly. Even if you know all hope is lost kill the family members as their dread and stars can really beat the odds.

4. Cannons, use gunpowder to kill off their arrows. I once won a mongol army using 5 cannons, 2 horse archers, 5 Sipahis Calvary and 6-7 various types of infantry. Cannons are effective when use correctly.

5. Never try and touch them unless you outnumber them 4-3.

Also have these two philosophies with you

1. If you dont kill the Mongols first, they will kill you

and

2. Every Mongol you kill today, is another Mongol you wont have to kill tommorrow.

So always execute prisoners of wars! Especially their damn princes

From a non-RP, gaming perspective, there is no point in letting prisoners go (unless you are strapped for cash and can try to ransom them) and also I always try to run as many down as I can when they flee the field.

Well letting them go gives you + chivalry which is handy in some situations.

How so?

The AI is programmed to always keep you at war anyways so I see little point in allieing with anyone except to give them bad PR when they break it.

I'm currently playing an interesting game as Germany.
Relatively soon in game, a crusade for Antioch was called. I send a crusading army by land and it manage to seize Antioch. Then, I captured Acre to get a castle nearby.

I was then busy with continous wars against Milan, Siciliy, France and Denmark, until I crushed Milan and Sicily, built a strong Castle in Hamburg (that has successfully repelled many Danish attacks), and obtain a draw with France.

A new crusade was called, for Jerusalem. I send the emperor himself, but he found a mongol army north of antioch that blocked the road. The mongols with 3 armies, defeated the emperor who ran away with a few hundred troops. Before the mongols could pursue, the emperor went for the coast, bought a mercenary ship, and sailed for Acre. Hungary, my allied, capture Jerusalem.

The emperor took the garrison in Acre, went North to size Allepo.

Antioch, Acre, and Allepo were now fully garrisonned, when a huge mongol army came from the North and lay siege to Antioch.

The emperor came from Allepo, with a second army coming from Acre, and attacked the rear of the mongols, a few armies were beaten, with heavy casualties, but the mongols send another army, defeated again the emperor, who retreated toward Acre. The mongols then took Allepo and Antioch, and started toward Acre, where the Emperor was preparing to wistand the siege.

The first assault from the Mongols was hard. The German army was small, fortification were not finished. The Emperors sacrificed some Kwazarim cavalry in a suicide sortie to destroy the ennemy ram, but the mongols were to many, and manage to take the gate. The German spearmen, baddly outnumbered, were slaughter. The Emperor sent his crossbowmen in the inner castle, and personally lead several charges (his bodyguard were the only remaining cavalry) against some isolated ennemy cavalry, and then quickly retreated to the inner castle. The mongols send some infantry there, they were killed by the Emperor's guard and some turcopole.

At the end of the day, the mongols had to withdrew: they still had 500 cavalry, but there infantry was dead, and they couldn't take the castle.

The emperor had only 2 guards left, 1 crossboman and 3 pikemen...

As the mongols lifted the siege, the emperor went in the countryside to hire some mercenaries, and reinforcement were built, just for one turn before the mongols came back.

The siege has now lasted for 6 years, half a dozen Mongols assault have been repelled by the valiant German defenders. Always following a similar pattern: destroy the ram, kill as many as possible, defend the walls with spearmen and foot knights, withdraw to the inner castle, slaugther the mongols infantry with crossbowmen, then when they cannot take the walls, pincushionned the mongol cavalry trapped in the walls. If possible, charge of the emperor on isolated units. Wait for the end of the day if the mongols are to many to kills.

In the meanwhile, I had the Pope asked for a new Crusade toward Antioch, and a new crusader German army has just arrived and took a Mongols citiy North West of Antioch.

I think I will manage to break the siege and rebuild an army in Acre, and then the emperor will move again to the offensive!

The mongols will be destroyed!

Nice AAR. Post more after you've handed the Mongols their youknowwhats.

The mongols will be destroyed!

Not so easy my friend, there are at least 7 more Mongol armies to destroy. If they capture a castle. Hell has arrived.

There seven armies were destroyed one by one by "Emperor Godwynn, the city protector". The second crusading army, coming from the North, took Aleppo. My contour attack has driven the mongols North East. I took Aleppo, Edessa, Ceasarea. They are doomed. And the Timurids just arrived.

Chivalry gives you governing bonuses as well as giving your men higher moral. On the other hand dread makes your enemys moral go down.

I'll make one. But I have not seen the Timurids yet. I've only heard rumors they are coming!
Sadly the Emperor died of old age... The Empire general in the area is not as good.

Here is a screen showing most of the territories I hold in the middle East.
