Anyone know where i could find pics of medieval french monumental architecture? Mostly interested in churches.
Most i found were of later periods, but i need something before the 16th century :)

Not easy, because
- Many churches were destroyed or damage during the revolution, and not always rebuilt as they were before
- We had a lot or renovation work done at some time, like by Violet le Duc, but he wasn't always respectful of the previous style.

Suggestion: plan your next holdays in France, take your camera with you!

What size of church are you looking for?

Big cathedral in cities? Small churches in the country side?

I would imagine if there's one thing you could find, it would be French medieval churches.

How about starting with the traditional burial church of the kings' of France, the Saint Denis basilica:

The stained glass of the Paris Sainte Chapelle is kind of impressive:

There's the cathedral of Chartres, peppered with mystic, neo-platonic apparently, symbolism:

The Notre Dame is of course a display of the politico-religious power of the French monarchy of the times:

The Abbey of Cluny, in Paris, incorporating Roman architetural remains, and today a museum of Medieval history:

If in Paris you could also check out the "Musée nationale des monuments francaise", which kind of impressively odd as a musum filled with 1:1 19th c. copies of important, mostly Medieval, stuff:

And that's just some Paris-and-environs-stuff.

Could someone also help with regular french houses of the period? Ideally i need four different ones, but i can also manage with just two. If they have a combination of stone and wood it would be best :)

I went round parts of southern France looking at Medieval stuff a couple of years ago.

I'm trying to attach a pic of nice Medieval houses from the central square of the little town of Mirepoix.
And a pic from the partly still remaining 11th c. town centre of Foix, in particular a covered passage between houses above street level. Lots of stairs in that town. Impressive castle where Henry IV was born.

Don't forget the Cathedral at Reims where the French kings were crowned for centuries from the Middle Ages to Louis XVI.

It turns out i won't be needing a chimney ;)

However it would be great if there is an image of a smaller church than the ones posted. I need it for the size #1 town :)

Finished the town and walled town. The cetnerpiece is the st. Etienne du Mont.

Moving on to the larger town, which will have the st. Denis as the centerpiece.

Nice looking!:)

Come to think of it, for Medieval French town "iconic-ness", Carcassonne is hard to match.

Aigues-mortes is pretty impressively Medieval as well.

What is the name of that small monastery/village complex on a hill? I could use some of its buildings for the metropolis, for the two other special buildings (in the center there will be the Notre Dame) :)

A very famous one, but i do not recall its name...

I think that the tide makes it an island on occasion? Not sure though.

One of my favourite short stories, De Maupassant's La Horla, in one of its three versions is set partly in there as well :) I will look it up there i guess.

No tide here i think, not sure if it is this one:
