I wouldn't use them any differently than normal catapults in the medieval age. They are pretty weak to be your anti-melee option that late. Maces have winning odds against them although they do cost 20h more (70 vs. 50). X-bows however cost 60h and have winning odds against maces; clearly better in an anti-melee role.
I hope the article will help people fight better wars at this stage of the game although this is generally the time of game where it is best to avoid fighting if you can. The defender may have a big edge with those pesky L-bows. After Engineering, you get Trebs, but the defender gets Castles!! Sometimes you have to fight though - you have someone pulling ahead in tech or you have an AI getting very large from beating up other civs. If you don't, wait for Cuirassiers or Cannon for more efficient conquests.
