I always respond positively to first meetings, but I've gotten negative first impressions before. I don't think this is it.I believe it's related to what you say when you meet them. Saying you are happy to show them your nearby city, or are happy to accept their invitation, will give a positive score.
Yes, if you sent a Delegate and there's a "-6 UNKNOWN" modifier, it's because you've transgressed their hidden agenda. However, they can also have a "+2 First Impression" or "-4 First Impression" modifier that isn't agenda related.I always thought the first impression "unknown" modifier is part of the AI's agenda, whether the ULA or a non-unique agenda - because when the diplomatic visibility with the AI increases, the "unknown reason" modifier disappears, and normal agendas begin to show up.
I've speculated that as well but can't verify.I remember reading a long time ago that it's based on whether or not you encounter them with a scout (positive) or more militaristic unit (negative). I never paid enough attention to early-game opinions of me to verify it, though.![]()

Can't verify either, though it seems the reverse is true for the militaristic civs.
At this point I am in fact inclined to wonder if specific leaders are preset to have a certain opinion of other specific leaders.I played as Scotland, which may also have some bearing (but we don't know).

So I tinkered around with Firetuner to see if there was any difference in discovering a civ with a scout or a warrior.
I set up an 8-player game (7 AI players) and used the "Explore All" option before settling, so I would have a blank map with just coloured blobs when the AI settled. I left them until turn 3, then spawned a Warrior beside their cities, then immediately deleted it. Then I reloaded and repeated the procedure with a Scout instead of a Warrior.
After their introduction speeches, I chose "It is an honour to meet you", then "Sharing our Capitals locations should promote trade".
Here's their like / dislike after contact has been established:
From what I observed, there was not any difference in discovering a civ with a scout vs a warrior.
- PERSIA Cyrus -2
- MACEDON Alexander +2
- INDIA Gandhi -1
- CANADA Wilfrid 0
- SPAIN Phil -2
- GREECE Gorgo -2
- KOREA Seondok +1
Next step would be to repeat the experiment but select the more brusque conversation options, including hiding my capital.
I played as Scotland, which may also have some bearing (but we don't know).
EDIT:
After selecting the more brusque conversation options, and not allowing the AI to know the location of my capital, the numbers above were the same.
Maybe they're tied more to the leader you are playing as. The experiments will continue... : )
