Mercurians and Infernal in peace issue.

So yesterday I was playing a very interesting game where the Bannor and Mercurians where Allied, and had a great war against the Infernal and Sheiam, and some other civ.

So I was neutral and took advantage of their situation, by declaring war on the Hippus next to me. I had almost won the battle, when an event popped up, declaring that a medium had made the Bannor at peace with the Infernals, also making the Mercurians not at war with them.

This in turn ruined the game, since now they weren't at war, Bannor declared war on me and wiped out my civilization.

As I've recalled, the Mercurians and the Infernals shouldn't be able to be at peace, but I don't know where I got this information. This event surely is ruining this, if it's true.

I was not sure where I'd post this issue, since I don't know if you can call this a bug really, but I'd just like to point it out.

It is not an issue. Mercurians can be at peace with AV nations. I think the reason is that allies of Mercurians are not always able to support eternal war because of the war weariness. It is possible for Hyborem even to convert to Order and become a good friend for Mercurians - that was discussed somewhere.

One thing I hate is the event that supposedly gives a +1 relations boost with your enemy civ (if you choose that option, nothing otherwise), but actually just automatically forces a peace treaty. I think the AI always accepts, even when it is not in their best interests to do so.

AI cis with human Permanent Allies are programmed to leave all their diplomacy to the human (since the very beginning of Vanilla), but that doesn't mean they stop effecting diplomacy though random events.

Basium is the one who pursues the war but he does occasionally offer peace (even outside of the event). But he doesn't stay at peace long and once the negotiated period has expired he will often start in again.

Aye, the event ought to simply open up diplomatic relations, not force peace. Fortunately I have never had the AI that I am at war with get the event, but it sure would annoy me to no end if I was forced to wait 10 turns when I was knocking at his door and winning.

I find that feature in AI very irritating.

Mercurians:
Desc: Basium broke the compact. He was an angel under Arawn but when the contract was signed he refused to give up the direct battle with the demons. So he and a small host of other rebel angels disobeyed their lords and kept fighting. They spend their time split between time on earth and in hell waqging their war directly. They can be found anywhere demons exist. They care little for people, they are only concerned with killing demons and are often confused with demons because of it and because of their rough warlike appearence.

And yet they will happily accept peace from the infernals when offered.

I've recently played two games as Basium and find this to be true.

However, as I supposedly have control of the Basium civ, I am mystified when I see the message YOU HAVE DECLARED WAR ON xyz.

Am I being forced to declare war on that civ by some game mechanic, or is it my ally declaring the war?

As you said, lasting peace is not an option when you are playing Basium. You are constantly at war, often with everyone. While certainly you will be at war constantly with Evil civs, Neutral civs are in the mix and even a Good civ can be included in that message above. But, I have found after a number of 'not talking' turns, civs are generally receptive to peace...short-lived peace mind you.

Now, if only the AI of your ally could be improved a bit, playing Basium would be great fun. :(

Yeah its Basium declaring war. The good side of having a teammate is you always have someone at your side in wars. The bad side is you laways have to be at his side during wars.

Well put, Kael. :)

It would be wonderful if, playing as Basium, you had a bit more choice on your wars. I guess it is part of the game that he declares war on everyone, especially Evil civs. However, often it just doesn't make sense when you are already getting pounded by 4-5 civs to see the message that you have declared war on someone else without actually making this decision yourself. How about a popup with a Yes/No choice on declaring war? :p

While I enjoy playing FFH2 with my favorite civ the Elohim the most, I find playing Basium the most challenging.
